In the competition, at St Andrews his tee shot on the famous/infamous 17th hole, hit a bird (seagull) and went out of bounds. The rules state that this is to be treated as a "rub of the green". and the ball should be played wherever it comes to rest, as you would for example, if your ball hit a tree. A bit traumatic for James who had to go back to the tee and start again. He then bogeyed the hole, no doubt a little unnerved and his bogey 5 plus the 2 shot penalty for going out of bounds added up to a 7. Some birdie, Mark.
No information is available as to the fate of the seagull, although some squawks were rumoured to have been heard which might have sounded something like "I'm gonna sh!t all over your car, Mark James"
