In my view, there's a pretty clear bias against genre films, especially comedies (but not just), in favor of straight or realistic drama films.
I'm wondering if anyone has any theories why this is the case.
If you don't agree that there's a bias that's fine, but I'm not that interested in your comment in that case. I'm only interested in comments from folks who agree with the premise. I don't want to debate whether there really is a bias. I'm interested in theories why there is a bias from folks who agree that there is a bias.
And please no "Because most genre films aren't very good" comments. That doesn't tell us anything. It's a given if there's a bias that the folks who prefer dramas think that most genre films aren't very good compared to dramas. We're trying to figure out why they tend to feel that way.

There is a bias against genre films.
Horror is the big one for a couple reasons. Many people just don't enjoy watching scary movies and this genre specifically has a tendency to be very lazy and rely on endless repetitive sequels and low budget schlock.
The horror genre often bores me. Many horror films consist of dull characters being killed off one by one by a boring killer. Do you know how many slasher movies were released between 1980 and 1984? Like 30, and most of them were cashing in on the fame of Halloween and Friday the 13th, putting in very little effort only existing to make a quick buck.

I feel like I'm one of those bias people against comedies and romance. But then again, I do get a little more than irritated when someone says they think horror is dumb.
So yes, I do believe there is a bias for every genre, hell possibly even drama.

You are about to get very irritated with me. Not the genre itself, but a large majority of horror movie are dumb imo.

You are about to get very irritated with me. Meh, I already would've guessed. No hard feelings, we're cool. I love a good horror movie though, they are just few and far between for me. The original Halloween is a prime example of a quality horror movie. It has the advantage of being one of the first of it's kind though. 30 slasher movies later and I start to lose interest.

Yeah I see what you mean. Halloween is the best not only because it started the slasher craze, but it simply is the best made. That being said, the thing is that most other slasher movies are just a lot of fun to watch. What do you say to the other subgenres (zombies, demons, paranormal etc.)?

A decent horror movie I've been recommending to people is The Limehouse Golem. Check it out if ya haven't seen it.
Back on topic, I've never understood the term "genre film". Doesn't every film belong to at least one genre?

Demons terrify me so I do have an a little more affection for those movies (Sinister, The Exorcist, Annabelle: Creation etc.). I am not too big on paranormal movies. The difference between you and me is that I don't find most slasher movies fun. A Nightmare on Elm Street came along and did something different and it did it with creativity, which is why it is one of the better horror movies. Same with Scream and a couple others. Terror Train is a bit of fun too. Wolf Creek is a well made horror movie but this suffers from "been there done that." Just another example of my problem with the genre.

No supernatural elements here. It's all very realistic and utterly terrifying. My favourite horror movie of the 2000s decade - just ahead of The Mist.

I've heard mixed things on it overall, but I'll give it a go someday. Not near the top on my watchlist, though.

My Watchlist is ridiculously long at the moment. So much I haven't seen or badly want to re-watch. I'm avoiding the horror genre until the autumn though. That way I can delve into my annual horror binge fully refreshed and reinvigorated.

The Oscars have always been biased against certain types of genres like Horror, Sci-Fi, etc.
