Oh christ what a negative self-defeatist view of the world. I for one love life with all its successes and its failures. I suppose you have never even experienced the simple joy of a sunny blue sky or the stars at night. Most of us have and do. WOW! Are you off target. "Self-Defeatest"? No way. Self-centered? Incredibly so, but not so self centered that I would actually bring a living thing into this world of puss, not being able to promise it justice, or even health. Having a child is THE MOST SELF CENTERED ACT THERE IS. don't wanna step on anyones tailfeathers but im gonna agree with both ops gameboy - yes it can be a fun experience having children and watching them grow up and experience things parents and grandparents did as kids like movies. first date. first car. first job. etc them1ghtyhumph - again I agree the world is a far more scarier and dangerous place than it was 15-20 years ago. that said I voted no not because I don't want kids. not because I do want them. but because i'm a lazy ass im only 26 years old (soon to be 27 next month) I've never worked in my life. never voted because again im a lazy ass. hell im still a virgin now will I ever have kids? I don't know since im only 26 and still have my whole life ahead of me. but when I think of how much responsibility having a wife and children are. the lazy ass comes out in me again and says do I really want to do that?

I don't think there are too many people who actually want and can have children, but aren't having them because they don't want to bring a child into this "horrible world" or think the world is already too populated. I imagine the majority of people who are choosing not to have children are doing so because they don't want the responsibility and financial hardship, which is fair enough. I guess I fall into that category, my dad has always said he wants me to have kids so he can have grandkids but im not sure I want the responsibility of raising kids. im only 26 will I ever have kids? who knows?

It is interesting to me to have read through all the posts here, and see the extreme ends of the spectrum, and the points in between. @marilynluvstigger, I'm glad your daughter was the best surprise of your life. It was a positive in your life, and hers, and that is a good thing. People that are happy with their lives. them1ghtyhumph, you remind me of another poster that was on the RFS board for a while; miccee. He was an anti-natalist, and felt that suffering was unavoidable as a sentient being, and he went so far as to say that if sentient life ended, there would be no more suffering. He also advocated for physician-assisted suicide. I didn't reproduce because I didn't think I would be a good mother, and my decision was right for me. Point being, there is no blanket answer to the question of whether having kids is good or bad. Every human's situation is different. To the person whose life has been bad, not bringing kids into that life is probably best for all involved. To a person who has a good life, and wants to bring kids into that life, that is a positive. Of course, all living humans should be cognizant of this planet's environment, and the effect of having more humans to feed is a concern. But there cannot be a generalized condemnation of someone who has made a different decision than others. The results of the poll are interesting in that on this board, there are few parents here. What does that say? Maybe something as simple as 'people with kids don't have time to post on message boards'. Or it might indicate a growing trend of people opting not to have kids. I just think it shouldn't have to come down to name-calling and insults. There is enough of that on other boards here.

Well you're still open to it, which is great. Just don't make the decision lightly or do it to please anyone else. It's the biggest thing anyone can ever do.

I have two oxymoronic "grown children." I enjoyed watching them grow and then fly away to make lives of their own. Don't understand the angst suffered by some "empty nesters." My Lovely Wife and I are having the times of our lives. It's fine if they call now and then or we talk by Skype, but they both live a long way from us and from each other. Mom and Dad are in the U.S. Southwest, #1 progeny lives in London, England while #2 offspring is employed in upstate New York.

I can still separate temporary setbacks and personal disappointments from my overall joy to be alive.

I really don't understand people who don't know what is right in front of them. There are both good things and bad things in front of them. He may be ignoring the good things but you are ignoring the bad things, which is not really much better. Both ways are a bad way to live. Focussing on only the good things in life does not change the fact that there are people out there who may not have access to any of them. No one has ever accused me of being an upbeat happy guy. I've experienced plenty of pain and misery. His attitude is a dead end and leads nowhere.
