Six time Academy Award-nominated actress Glenn Close (born March 19, 1947 in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA)
"With the hugely talented women I've worked with or observed, it's not a question about temperament or ego; it's a question about getting it right. If they've got a reputation for being difficult it's usually because they just don't suffer fools."

"She wasn't trying to please people. She didn't say, "Love me." She had the courage to play unattractive characters with only the hope that people understand them in the end."

"When it comes to changing minds about mental illness, and ending its stigma, few people are more motivated than actress Glenn Close."
- Tracy Smith, CBS News
"Glenn Close is truly the most fun (especially in the kitchen). She is making the rounds in preparation for her return to her Tony-winning role in Sunset Boulevard—literally, in one case. The Tony winner stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 25 to dish about what she loves about her Sunset character, Norma Desmond, and crashing old apartments with her pal, who happens to be Lady Gaga's mom."

Became a favorite from the very first time I saw her …. Garp Classy and a classic in : The Big Chill
Wonderfull as awful Alicia in The Paper Have never seen her in anything that I did not admire her performance even if I didn't care for the movie itself.

They say Clint Eastwood blushed bright red when he saw Glenn Close. Turns out it was true, I've seen the pictures.

Would love to see her on stage … she seems to really shine even brighter live and in person.

I was looking at her IMDB page for a good personal quote... there are too many to C&P so here's the whole thing … she says things on many subjects so well ! Personal quotes
one of favorites that I heard her say in an interview: I've often been mistaken for my good friend Meryl Streep, although never on Oscar night.

He went to see her in the stage show 'Sunset Boulevard'. Her six Oscar nominations without a win tie Close with Deborah Kerr and Thelma Ritter.

An early champion of Glenn Close's talent was actor Al Pacino who suggested her to director Brian De Palma for the role of Elvira Hancock in 'Scarface' (1983). Pacino understood that Close had worked with her friend and mentor from the theatre in 'The World According To Garp', actress Mary Beth Hughes. Unfortunately for Close, 'Scarface' producer Martin Bregman didn't consider her a realistic option and the role went to Michelle Pfeiffer (who's terrific).
Pacino would work again with Pfeiffer on the cafe romance 'Frankie And Johnny' (1991), an adaptation of Terrence McNally's play 'Frankie And Johnny In The Clair De Lune' (1982). McNally was once thrilled by a reading of a new adaptation he'd written of 'Pal Joey' (1940) that was delivered by Close and Harry Connick Jr. but the project stalled and to this day remains classified as "indefinitely postponed". Close would work with Pfeiffer on the period piece 'Dangerous Liaisons' (1988) and the two of them got along well.

Close has worked on films with some of the best theatre actors in the business but she's yet to make a movie with Pacino. If the right project comes their way, I reckon there's little doubt they'd enjoy hooking up. You might say they have some "unfinished business" to take care of.

She's an absolute chameleon or shapeshifter, meant in a positive way! I liked this movie and totally forgotten about it until OP mentioned her career, Jagged Edge 1986, or as the Swedish distributer called it translated to English, The Knife is the Only Witness. The voice of Mona Simpson.

A wonderful tribute, Petrolino. Thank you. I think it would take me a day and a half to throw one of these tributes together. I don’t know how you do it.

One man Glenn Close has always gone to bat for is actor Robert Duvall who was there for her from the beginning with 'The Natural' (1984) and 'The Stone Boy' (1984), right on through to 'The Paper' (1994).
"To work with Duvall you seem like you’re not acting, you know. In fact there better not be too much acting going on around him because he’s so grounded and so real. I think he’s a touchstone for that kind of really real interesting base human behavior. So in The Stone Boy, where we played husband and wife, it really was just kind of—you know—existing. And it was just natural. True to the event … true to what we were reacting to. It was just heavenly working with him."

Another remarkable thing about Glenn Close is that she has produced a number of things over the years - everything from documentaries, tv movies, and features like the exceptional Albert Nobbs. She deserves a lot of credit for that, enabling projects to get done that would otherwise languish.
She also deserves credit for her work in the field of mental illness, motivated by of her sister's bipolar disorder, which has helped enlighten people around the world. And I've always been grateful for her willingness to appear both in television as well as features. Whatever she appears in she always makes better. Hopefully she'll receive that long overdue and well-deserved Oscar sometime soon!

Albert Nobbs (2011) is exceptional, spiderwort is right! I had high hopes for Glenn to finally win her long overdue Oscar that year, but it went to Meryl Streep...again! I was thinking of all the great Streep roles that got nominated through the years and for which she didn't win, only to win in Glenn Close's year! ARRGGGHHHH! Give that woman her Oscar already!!!

Something I learnt more about reading articles yesterday is that she's also a talented songwriter. Back in the 1960s, her first marriage was to a singer-songwriter named Cabot Wade. She was a featured singer with the group Up With People and was a member of the Green Glenn Singers.
Here she is with the Green Glenn Singers (far left).

Yes, Lebowski, as much as I love Streep (and I do), I honestly thought Close should have won for NOBBS that year. Btw, I think it took her about six years to get that film greenlit! What a great performance she gave in a role that obviously meant so much to her.

I did not know this! That explains a few things - like her appearing and singing in South Pacific. What a remarkably talented woman - and we have to remember that she didn't even come to films until she was 35! (Btw, Tess Harper told me the same thing Close said about working with Duval.) Thanks for another great thread, petrolino.
