Who was the better writer? My money's on the Irish lad. Joyce. I don't even like him that much, but I can't stand Proust.

I've never really got on with Joyce. I'm told Ulysses is a masterpiece, but for me it was little more than an aimless struggle to sit through. And A Portrait ... started off interesting, but even for such a short book, the second half was difficult to get through, it seemed like as soon as he gets to uni, all he's interested in is informing the reader about how brilliantly insightful and clever he is.
As for Proust, I've only read Swann's Way. I did try and find the rest of the volumes for free, but I can't say as I have a massive inclination to read more.

I haven't read anything by either of them and that is likely to remain unchanged by the time I check out, since they are both quite low in the list of major writers whose work I would like to explore some day.
