I know there is a stigma associated with made-for-TV/Lifetime movies, but there are some really good ones based on true stories:
The Siege at Ruby Ridge (1996 TV movie) A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story (1992 TV movie) Her Final Fury: Betty Broderick, the Last Chapter (part 2 of above) Perfect Murder, Perfect Town: Jon Benet and the City of Boulder (2000 TV movie) The Late Show (1996 TV movie) Elvis (1979 TV movie) Victim of Love: The Shannon Moore Story (1993 TV movie)
More good movies based on true stories:
All the President's Men The Bounty Eight Men Out Summer of '42 Game Change Lenny Midnight Express Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Star 80 Auto Focus Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones Inherit the Wind The Miracle Worker In the Valley of Elah Ed Wood Zodiac The Social Network Quiz Show Mask Goodfellas Casino The Aviator Donnie Brasco Raging Bull Bonnie and Clyde (1967) Braveheart Reversal of Fortune

A few from my shelves from around the world...all highly Recommended...
Le Retour de Martin Guerre ,The Return of Martin Guerre (1982) France, Directed by Daniel Vigne
Based on a case of imposture in 16th century France, involving Martin Guerre The marvellous film relates a historical case of alleged identity theft. Martin Guerre leaves his young wife in a small French village to go fight in a war, and to travel. Eight or nine years later, Martin ( Depardieu) returns to resume his life. The man is initially acknowledged and welcomed by the wife, family, and friends because he knows the intimate details of his former life, but is he really Martin?....
Дерсу Узала , Dersu Uzala (1961) Russia, Directed by Agasi Babayan
Based on the true life adventures of Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev which he recounted in a series of books, telling of his military journeys to the Ussuri basin in the Russian Far east where he met Dersu Uzala a native hunter, from 1902 to 1907. He was the first to describe numerous species of Siberian flora and lifestyle of native ethnic people.
Djúpið , The Deep (2012) Iceland, Directed by Baltasar Kormákur
Based on on the fascinating true story of Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, a fisherman who fights to survive in the freezing North Atlantic ocean for hours after his boat capsizes off the south coast of Iceland..
Ni Liv , Nine Lives (1957) Norway, Directed by Arne Skouen
Based on the compelling true adventure of Jan Baalsrud who was a member of the Norwegian resistance during World War II. In 1943, he participated in an operation to destroy a German air control tower. This mission was compromised when he and his fellow soldiers, seeking a trusted resistance contact, accidentally made contact with a civilian who betrayed them to the Nazis. On the run through the harsh snow covered mountaninous region of Norway he struggles to make it to safety in neutral Sweden.
Ingenjör Andrées luftfärd , The Flight Of The Eagle (1982) Sweden, Directed by Jan Troell
Based on the true story of S. A. Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897, an ill-fated effort to reach the North Pole, the compelling adventure film stars Max von Sydow
O Cangaceiro , The Bandit (1953) Brazil, Directed by Lima Barreto
Based on the true life figure and exploits of Lampião. He was the most famous bandit leader of the Cangaço, Cangaço was a form of banditry endemic to the Brazilian Northeast in the 1920s and 1930s. Lampião's exploits turned him into a 'folk hero', the Brazilian equivalent of Jesse James. An amazing film which re-enacts with great detail the costumes and times.

Coal Miner's Daughter Fire in the Sky (supposedly a true story!) Fire has one of the most remarkable scenes in it. When DB Sweeney is cowering under the table he really looks scared almost unto death. I was stricken by it and wondered ... what memory is that guy drawing on to act so incredibly real. Very good film and not spoken of much. Interesting cast and story. Fire in the sky link

Both of those actors have kind of fallen into obscurity, and it's a shame. The film was very enjoyable, regardless of the authenticity of the source material. The book it's based off of is on my TBR list.
