John Wayne's only acting Academy Award was for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" (1969)
Was this more of a Lifetime Achievement award from the Academy? One of those years where there wasn't an OUTSTANDING performance and it was the perfect time to give John Wayne an Oscar after so many years acting.
He delivers a strong performance, no doubt, but still...
And if so, do you know of any other instances where you think this occurred in Oscar History?

"There wasn't an outstanding performance"?
Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight gave much better performances than Wayne.
That Award belongs to Ratso Rizzo.

Paul Newman for The Color of Money. Granted, he was fantastic in that movie, but should have won a few years earlier for The Verdict.

If we replace "lifetime achievement" with "a prior performance," then absolutely. DiCaprio for The Revenant, Heath Ledger for Dark Knight, Bette Davis for Dangerous, Halle Berry for Monster's Ball, Denzel Washington for Training Day... The list goes on and on. I'm not saying none of these performances is noteworthy, but I don't think any of them would have received the Oscar for that role if not for their prior work (or because Ledger died).
Most awards are really just a popularity contest anyway. An actor gets a lot of recognition because either they have a body of work that is respected, prompting people to feel that it is their time to win (John Wayne) or because they are new and just have an aura about them that captures everyone's attention (Gwenyth Paltrow). Sure, every now and then an actor gives a truly award-worthy performance, but for the most part, great performances occur every few years--definitely not four in one year.
And let's not forget how many awards are given because of well-coordinated schmoozing to align with awards season,
I'm really not this cynical. But I have learned through a lot of reading biographies and other related literature just how random and arbitrary an award can be.

When Jessica Tandy won, I remember her later saying to the press "I think they gave it to me because I'm old".
