Taking up the Circus theme… “Circus Boy” was a children’s western from Screen Gems. It played on Saturday mornings in my city. The first season premiered in September 1956 on NBC. The show moved to ABC for its second and last season from September 1957 to December 1957. 49 total episodes were broadcast. 12-year-old Mickey Braddock starred as Corky, whose parents were killed in a high-wire accident. Robert Lowery was Big Tim Champion, the new owner of the circus and guardian of Corky. Noah Berry, Jr. was Uncle Joey, a clown. A couple of other occasional occurring actors were Guinn “Big Boy” Williams as a roustabout and Sterling Holloway as Elmer Purdy. My major memories of the show were the opening credits and the Season 1, Episode 4 story when Corky rode a camel to victory in a horse race. Who knew camels were faster than race horses? Well, maybe it’s true. 12 years later, Mickey Braddock, this time under his real name of Mickey Dolenz, became one of The Monkees. Robert Lowery had been the second actor to play Batman on screen. Lewis Wilson became the first in the 15-chapter cliffhanger serial “Batman” in 1943. Lowery replaced him in the follow-up serial “Batman and Robin” – another 15 chapters – in 1949. Lowery also starred alongside TVs Superman, George Reeves, in a WWII training film called “Sex Hygiene.”

I definitely remember watching Circus Boy, and when The Monkees came into existence, knowing that Mickey Dolenz had been Circus Boy

I loved Circus Boy when I was a kid. It was already in reruns when I caught it. Fun show. Was it also a western? I mean that seriously . It was, I believe, set in period, but I'm not sure which one. Maybe early 20th century. I don't remember cars in it offhand, but that's going back a long way.

But it did take place in the late 1880's, the same time most westerns were set. What I notice is that Mickey Braddock was a towhead blond, but Mickey Dolenz had dark hair. While I do realize that blond children's hair do grow darker as they mature, this change seems quite swift. Makes me wonder if Mickey's hair was bleached when he was on CIRCUS BOY.

Good question, Snsurone. I know that Tommy Rettig's hair was "blonded" for his movie and TV roles. Mickey's likely was, too. I can imagine him as being much fairer as a child,--my hair was lighter when I was a kid than when I became a grownup, too--however in Mickey's case is seems way lighter. Jay North wasn't a blonde kid, and he hated the hair color he had playing Dennis the Menace. Then there were the Children Of The Damned. I'd say almost certainly yes.

telegonusDolenz's hair was naturally wavy. On Circus Boy (1956), his hair was chemically straightened and dyed blond. During the first season of The Monkees (1966), he would straighten his hair by brushing it while damp until dry, and would wear a hair net in between takes. By the second season, he let his hair go natural, and shortly into the second season filming, when the group adopted a hippie look, had a permanent to get a curly "Afro" look.

Thanks for all that, Bat. Mickey Dolenz had a lot of hair alterations when he was young. I wonder what he looked like later on, if he's still alive.
