The competition committee is currently proposing to trim the overtime in preseason and regular games to 10 minutes and leave it at 15 minutes for post season.
IMO, leave regular season alone. It's fine the way it is, as far as preseason goes, just eliminate it. Nobody cares about preseason games anyhow

They should eliminate OT all together.

I hate when there are different rules for the regular season and the postseason. It's stupid in hockey, and it will be stupid in the NFL if they change it.

I know there are periods on the clock, but the post season is "until someone wins". Unless they want to do field goal shootouts or something.

I'm good with them eliminating OT from the preseason, but I don't agree with the reasoning for regular season games. As much as I hate the Thursday night games and think that they're bad for the players, I don't think that fifteen minutes at the end of the game the Sunday before is going to make a difference, and I certainly don't think that taking five minutes off of the clock is going to make a difference, either.

Technically, the OT rules are already different for regular season and postseason. In the regular season, if they play 15 minutes and no one scores, then the game ends in a tie. In the postseason, if they play 15 minutes and no one scores, the game continues until some one scores.

Ideally I'd have: no pre-season OT, who cares? I'd even cut the pre-season to 3 games. Season, I could do without OT entirely. Just let the tie stand. If this is unpalatable then do a very simple OT: 1 offensive possession for each team guaranteed, if still tied then declare the game a tie. Post-season, just play 15 more minutes with regular rules; no coin toss BS; at the end of regulation just keep playing like when we go from 1st quarter to second or from third to fourth. If one team is ahead at the end of the 15 minutes the game ends. If not, another 15 minutes but now first to score wins.
This is simple and does give the fans the thrill of seeing more football if at the end of 60 minutes the game is tied. It also eliminates the frustration of losing a coin toss and not having an offensive opportunity if the opponents score a TD. I simply hate it when a QB orchestrates a spectacular come back and ties the game, then his team loses the coin toss and he never touches the ball again. Yes, I'm aware that the defense needs to step up, but it does feel profoundly unfair to the offense.

What's the point of cutting OT when it's sudden death anyway? We'll just end up with more ties that way.
I'd rather see it changed by giving each team one possession from the 20 or whatever. Something like college. But in a way that most OTs would be over in less than 15 minutes.

I don't care what they do to preseason, but overtime in the regular NFL season should be mostly like the preseason. Play a full quarter regardless of who scores, how many possessions, whatever. You get a touchdown? Great, now kick off. Play until the clock reads 0:00. Coin toss and kickoff to start. 2 timeouts per team plus two minute warning. As for the NHL? Playoff overtime hockey is the best overtime of the Big 4. Regular season hockey overtime is the worst once they get to the shootout. It would be like in the NBA, after a 5 minute period they played H-O-R-S-E to see who wins. So ridiculous.

Ideally I'd have: no pre-season OT, who cares? Agreed. What's the point of OT in preseason? There should be no OT in preseason. Nobody cares. Season, I could do without OT entirely. Just let the tie stand. If this is unpalatable then do a very simple OT: 1 offensive possession for each team guaranteed, if still tied then declare the game a tie. I'd still have the 15-minute maximum but guarantee at least 1 offensive possession for each team, even if the team receiving the OT kickoff scores a TD on their 1st possession. So what happens if Team 1 scores a TD on their 1st possession and then Team 2 scores a TD on their 1st possession? Or if Team 1 scores a FG on their 1st possession and then Team 2 scores a FG on their 1st possession? Do they continue playing until the next score? No, here's where the rules should be slightly modified. Let's say Team 1 receives the OT kickoff and scores a TD on their 1st possession and the drive took 5 minutes 10 seconds. Then Team 2 gets the kickoff and gets 5 minutes 9 seconds. If Team 2 can score a TD in 5 minutes and 9 seconds, then Team 2 wins. If Team 2 can't score a TD in 5 minutes and 9 seconds, then Team 1 wins. Basically, each team is guaranteed at least 1 offensive possession but if Team 1 scores on their 1st possession, then it's a "beat the clock" situation for Team 2. And if Team 1 doesn't score on their 1st possession, then the next score wins (like it is now) or the 15 minutes expire. Postseason, should still be the same as regular season (each team guaranteed at least 1 offensive possession, with the "beat the clock" situation for Team 2 if Team 1 scores on their 1st possession), but if the 15 minutes expire, they continue playing until there's a winner (like it is now).

I have to say AH, that is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard.
