I didn't like it on first viewing, but it really grew on me in repeat viewings and now I love it.
It's full of ambiguous meaning, memorable images, a great villain in HAL, an iconic score and sets that still look great 50 years later.
This is how I feel although I dont love it, just like it quite a bit. Its one of those films where you need to do some background reading before you view it for the first time - because without it you will almost certainly find it boring and pretentious. And the poll needs an opinion of inbetween a masterpiece and garbage.

I read it many years after seeing it and it explained quite a bit.

It is my Opinion, that 2001 is a bit too cryptic... and so I can't label it as one of the best movies every made, and therefor it isn't a "masterpiece"... I actually prefer the sequel, 2010...
But, I will agree the special effects for 2001 were incredible!
Even with it's flaws, it is better than many other films.
And so, I can understand why so many people think 2001 is one of the best films every made...
For anyone who doesn't like the movie, I think calling it "Pretentious Garbage" is too harsh... The movie isn't "overrated". Your opinion "underrates" the movie... And there is nothing wrong with that, because, I can understand why you don't like the film!

It's painfully dull, pretentious, self-indulgent garbage. It's one of the worst movies i've ever seen. It's as entertaining as watching paint dry.

I don't really want to bash it because i know what it did for cinema in general....its just that i didn't enjoy watching it. I found it incomprehensible and utterly boring the strong majority of the time.

The only thing you hit close to the mark was when you spit your father's cum in your mom's mouth, you pathetic asshole. You should have died at birth. Your mom should have swallowed you. I hope you die real soon

Can't it be both? Its one of those films where you need to do some background reading before you view it for the first time it probably would be beneficial to read the book before seeing the film. That's the same arguement fans of the source material use when an adaptation doesn't explain something... or people use when a movie based on true events expects the viewer to know every detail of historical context. No, a movie has to work on its own.
