It's a pretty darn good movie, especially for its time. So I'm voting masterpiece.

Thumbs Down.
it's quite overrated. it's a bit too dull overall even though it did have a brief decent bit and piece here and there. 4/10 (below average). it's no where even vaguely close to a masterpiece in my mind.

I liked it a lot. Definitely not garbage, maybe a little pretentious (not always a bad thing, if you look at the origins of the word, i.e., "to pretend") and maybe something close to a b-movie masterpiece. HAL was creepy, for sure.

I didn't like it on first viewing, but it really grew on me in repeat viewings and now I love it.
It's full of ambiguous meaning, memorable images, a great villain in HAL, an iconic score and sets that still look great 50 years later.

I was only about 10 or 11 when I first saw this in 70mm and thought it was the most boring film I had ever seen at the time. Of course I only wanted laser fights and spaceship battles ala Star Wars, but in hindsight now, I think the film is a stunning achievement. Kubrick gave us a cinematic masterpiece, working with the technology that was available at the time and the film is still a thought provoking and layered sci fiction piece. It is an interesting and intriguing glimpse into a foreseeable near future, that didn't really come to pass.
Apparently there was a composed Alex North score to go along with the film, until it was scrapped in favor of classical music. This did work in well with the film and perhaps has made it less dated as well.

Both.
Pretentious garbage for those too obtuse to realize how stupid they are.
A masterpiece for those who are interested in the evolution of mankind from it's primitive beginnings (when inventing tools as weapons) to the starchild returning back to Earth.

I've always thought 2001 was a truly great film, whilst simultaneously being able to admit that it really is kind of boring.
But I went to the cinema for the recent one-day re-release, and I have to say that seeing it in the big screen, it wasn't the least bit boring or even slow. It was a wonderful experience and I was totally engaged throughout.
So Masterpiece.
