My vote is for Chrissie. Definitely. The imagination just fills right up and then some, whether the viewer likes it or not!
That bit where Chrissie is holding onto the buoy was especially horrifying, because it was like a 3 second respite from her bleak doom and she knows there's nothing she can do about it and she's just so scared. Talk about not having any time to prepare for one's death. It's almost too much to watch.
I might have given the man in estuary's death scene more consideration, if they had used the original shot, with young Mike Brody in the dying man's hands, the man, barely alive now, being devoured just beneath the surface. I guess the scene was deemed too intense, so they cut it.

Agreed, Chrissie's death in the opening was the scariest and best death scene.

Quint. Pretty visceral stuff.

Tough choice, but I think the unsuspecting Chrissie over Quint watching his own death approaching and happening.

Crissie...it’s set up to be horrifying and it delivers wonderfully.

Quint's. It was the one that gave me a vivid nightmare that night. When I was a kid, I used to get all freaked out at night, with my bed instead of the ORCA and the great white at the foot of my bed and me instead of Quint, slip slip slipping... Ahhhhh.....

I have to go with Quint because I think it's likely Chrissie drowned or lost consciousness before being eaten. She may not have even seen it. Quint's whole body was going down its throat a little at a time in broad daylight. He knew what was happening and he had more time to think about it.

She was screaming in pain and was very much aware of what was happening to her. Horrifying so. She was definitely not unconscious and she definitely did not drown. How long has it been since you've seen the movie?

How long has it been since you've seen the movie? I just watched that scene again on You Tube. Yes, she knew something was dragging her around but she can't see it. Even on moonlit nights you can't see what's under the water. At this point she's probably already losing blood. I'm not sure she's screaming in pain. It could be the fear and horror of the situation. People who have been bitten by shark's teeth often don't realize it at first. We don't see what happens after it pulls her under. It wouldn't take but a few seconds to lose consciousness and drown. The whole thing happens faster than Quint's experience.

I don't think Quint's death scene is any longer than Chrissie's. If anything, the other way around. It's just that Chrissie's death is at beginning of the movie and we don't really have to much process what's happening and you don't see the shark. With Quint's death, it's the exact opposite and with Quint struggling and the shark waiting for Quint with its scary mouth wide open and with the audience squirming in their seats, it just seems like it takes longer with Quint. But I don't think it really is.

But what we find scariest is always subjective. I know even before the film was released, I never felt comfortable swimming in the ocean at night. Chrissie's death scene sort of validated my fear.

Yes! And Quint's death was the second scariest one for me probably because of this, I can't even imagine seeing yourself just helplessly slide down into the shark's mouth... brrr... And I really can't watch his death scene any more than I can watch Chrissie's (in fact, the only death scene I really can watch without a problem is the boy's, and that shot still has that awesome image of the shark fin's lazy rolling over as it takes the boy! What a great shot!) It's actually a different kind of fear going on with these two scenes. The image of Quint being eaten alive (like you said, in broad daylight) by that huge beast is horrifying. There's no denying that. But with Chrissie's death, the fear, I think, goes deeper. Maybe it comes down to the adage "less is more", but I think the viewer identification with Chrissie is somehow different than viewer identification with Quint. All we know is something truly terrible is happening to Chrissie - we don't see anything - all we know is that she is terrified because she knows that she is going to die in the ocean, by herself, very soon.
