Probably my favorite period for film, a lot of these would make my Top 20 regardless of decade or language. Tried to order them, but gave up and listed them chronologically. A little too heavy on Japanese films perhaps:
L’Avventura (Italy, 1960) La Dolce Vita (Italy, 1960) When A Woman Ascends the Stairs (Japan, 1960) The Human Condition III: A Soldier’s Prayer (Japan, 1961) Last Year in Marienbad (France, 1961) Through A Glass Darkly (Sweden, 1961) An Autumn Afternoon (Japan, 1962) Vivre sa Vie (France, 1962) An Actors’ Revenge (Japan, 1963) Kwaidan (Japan, 1964) Onibaba (Japan, 1964) The Red Desert (Italy, 1964) Woman in the Dunes (Japan, 1964) Andrei Rublev (Russia, 1966) Balthazar (France, 1966) The Face of Another (Japan, 1966) Persona (Sweden, 1966) Marketa Lazarova (Czechoslovakia, 1967) The Bride Wore Black (France, 1968) Eros + Massacre (Japan, 1969)

The Exterminating Angel, while interesting, left me just a little cold. I typically love Bunuel so I need to give it another chance. I really want to see most of the others which you list!

Blood and Black Lace (Bava brings it home in COLOR, baby!) The Exterminating Angel Jules and Jim Last Year at Marienbad Viridiana Shoot the Piano Player Black Sabbath Diary of a Chambermaid Playtime Accatone Persona (okay, I sort of dissed Bergman in an earlier post, but that was really only when I stood him next to RW Fassbinder, and Fassbinder's 60s output was slim pickings. And "Persona" was very interesting, sort of a precursor to "3 Women", though not as multi-layered and with none of the humor or warmth of the 1977 film.) Knife in the Water Rocco and His Brothers The College Girl Murders Les Cousins (technically it's 1959, but it's also French New Wave and I think it can go here on this list just fine.) Bay of Angels The Girl Who Knew Too Much Stolen Kisses Fists in the Pocket Masculine Feminine

The only other Teshigahara film I have seen, apart from Woman in the Dunes, is the very good Pitfall.

The Young One (1960) (Bunuel) I have been meaning to watch Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors for the longest time... I have a very high opinion of Soviet movies. I do suggest you to try out Soviet comedies of the director Leonid Gaidai. I especially suggest the following movies:
Apart from that I also recommend Soviet horror called VIY (1967)
I strongly encourage you to watch Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. It's beautiful like a painting. The movie proved to be very unlucky for the director Parajanov as the Soviet Union government thought it was a movie to light Ukranian freedom movement. He was arrested on false charges of gay rape and put behind bars. The movie in itself is a very moving love story. Tremendous detail has been given to customs and traditions of Ukraine.
If you enjoy one of these movies then I do be glad to recommend more.
Just a note - My initial list was a list of random movies that I remember I enjoyed from 60s. It was not a list of my absolute favourites. Viridiana (1961) would be my no.1 pick.

I might have looked at the replies too quickly, so I might have missed them, but how has no one mentioned City of God or Black Book? 2 others that I think are great though are Oldboy and House of Flying Daggers. I think you looked at the thread title too quickly.

Hell, it's difficult to find 10-20 non-English movies worth mentioning straight up, regardless of what years.
so while there are some non-English movies that stand out, there are not many.

Hell, it's difficult to find 10-20 non-English movies worth mentioning straight up, regardless of what years. so while there are some non-English movies that stand out, there are not many. What you mean to tell is that it is difficult for you to find good non-English movies. It seems to me that you are writing your opinion as a fact when you say that there are not many Non-English movies that stand out.
If non-English movies really do not stand out then how come they so often win Palme d'Or at Cannes, Golden Bear at Berlin and Golden Lion at Venice film festival.
Almost all the world recognises best directors having come from Germany, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Russia and many other countries. While USA (and other English nations) has its share of greatness in producing great movies and great directors such as Kubrik, they are not so far ahead that non-English movies don't stand out. Hell, even the best directors of USA continuously sing praises of great masters from all over the world.

mortsahlfanSome nice movies there and good for me because I haven't seen quite a few from your list. After reading mini-plot from IMDB I want to see the following ones the most: 1) The Shop on Main Street (1965) 2) Fists in the Pocket (1965) 3) The Battle of Algiers (almost everyone has mentioned this)
