Read William K. Everson's book "The Bad Guys". It's the best treatise on movie villains that I have ever seen.

J J Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) in Sweet Smell of Success (1957) dir: Alexander MacKendrick. Here with Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) who is morally even worse, but it is Hunsecker who pulls the strings.

In Angel Heart (1987) dir: Alan Parker, Private Investigator Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) spends the whole movie looking for the bad guy. Boy, was he in for a surprise!
