Speeding around the world to reverse time and save Lois. Good moment or a cringe-worthy bad moment? I vote the latter. Well, if not bad, then just stupid.

Superman II was my favorite, watched it every time it came on cable, which was a lot. It was the best version of a Superman movie at that time, and I believe it still is. I was obsessed with comics growing up, and there were very few movies or TV shows then, but we were lucky to have this and the original. It had Luthor and the Phantom Zone villains. You felt like the stakes were high because Superman gave up his powers for the love of Lois. The romance seemed worth giving it all up for too, even though I was too young for such mushy stuff.
I didn't mind Superman III so much because we went back to Smallville and we met Lana Lang and the trash compactor fight with the evil Superman is pretty iconic now.

I think II is the best of the first three. I saw III at the theater but don't remember much outside of the evil woman turning into some kind of cyborg at the end.

None of them hold up for me.
My favorite as a kid was II

Should read Smallville, autocorrect is evil.

ah, Supes is only second to Batman.
Superman is THE genre classic and template for modern CBMs, and still one of the films with the highest production values. The musical score is unrivalled in thematic depth and orchestration.
The second film one was a fun action movie, which was maybe too un-characteristic for the character, eg when he crushed and killed helpless Zod with a smile.
Third one had one good sequence: the Red Kryponite personality-change and the fight, but was forgettable otherwise. So are the cheap 4th installment and the overly tedious and redundant Superman Returns.
Man of Steel is a rehash of I and II but has it's artistic merits in terms of character arc, production values, music and screenplay.
There are a lot of good shows, animated or live action, too.

Superman is my #29 all time.
S2 Donner Cut is great, though Clark going back to the diner with his powers to beat up the bully seemed gratuitous.

The first Superman is still my favorite comic book movie of all time.

Only seen the Theatrical Cuts of all movies. Didn't watch them until last year or so, but I did end up really liking the first two a lot. III was average, and IV was pretty much the movie others made it out to be. Returns was okay, and not very deserved of the hate, but I do agree it was too long.

Thanks, Bond -now I'm probably going to have to go out and buy the set, because I suddenly want to relive the franchise and can't hang about for Netflix discs.

I only watched the Theatrical Cut of Superman, the original version and the Richard Donner Cut of Superman II, and the lackluster sequels that are Superman III and IV: Quest for Peace. I haven't seen Supergirl and don't really plan to. The Lester version was pretty good although I dislike the "cellophane S" and the added campy moments that were filmed to justify his directorial credit. The Donner Cut was great with the tightened connection to the first film and the restored Jor-El scene, although I hated the copied ending from the first film and the plot hole of Clark going back to the diner to beat up Rocky for a fight that never happened.
Superman Returns is okay. I did think Kevin Spacey was perfect casting as Lex Luthor. Brandon Routh was pretty decent as Clark Kent/Superman although he wasn't allowed to bring anything new to the character. I did not like the design of his suit, however. Kate Bosworth was too young to play Lois Lane. The film needed more action and more meat to the story to justify its length. I do think a sequel, had it been made, would have justified Returns's existence.

That short clip from Superman: the Movie when Supie rescues Lois from turning into a pancake is still one of my favorite movie moments, containing one of my favorite snippets of dialogue: "Easy, miss--I've got you." " You've got me? Who's got you?" Much as I enjoy the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies, I just have never got around to watching III and IV. From what I heard from people whose opinions I trust, I don't think I've missed much. (Also, just watching I and II leaves me with mixed feelings, because I can't help grieving over Christopher Reeve. ) Supergirl was one of the strangest movies I've ever seen. While I got the feeling that poor Helen Slater (as Supergirl, and not to be confused with Helen Shaver) tried very hard, she couldn't overcome that oddball, off-putting script, or the over-the-top hammy acting of Faye Dunaway. Christian took the words out of my mouth...er, my fingers. Very well said.
