Trying to catch up on comedies that I've missed (there's a lot of them!) released before 1980. I've seen more but my favorites so far are:
What's Up Doc? (1972) The Pink Panther-serie Young Frankenstein (1974) His Girl Friday (1940) The Court Jester (1955) Pillow Talk (1959) Oscar (1967) Foul Play (1978) Animal House (1978) Monthy Pythons Life of Brian (1979)
What's some of your favorites?

Thanks mike! I've been meaning to try out Marx-brothers. I'm probably one of the few here that haven't seen a whole movie with them. Seen bits and pieces here and there but the latest was many years ago. Are all good or should I focus on some. Should they be watched in some kind of order? I've always thought they were stand-alone films but maybe it's better to see them according to release-dates?
I've only seen The General and Holiday which I liked very much from your second part and many looks very interesting there. Thanks again! Christmas-time is early this year.

Used Cars is 1980, but feels more like a 70s movie. A hilarious classic, which I've watched repeatedly over the years. Never gets old.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) is another one that I love.

Thanks again movielover! The Great Race is a favorite and coincidentally I watched The Front Page for the first time on monday. Liked it even if I thought His Girl Friday was better.
From your sports-movies I haven't seen North Dallas Forty and will def try to find it.
Shamed to say that I haven't seen The Wizard of Oz yet although I've always meant to. Have to watch it soon so I won't be embarrassed anymore.
From the rest of your list I have only seen The Jerk, American Graffiti, Grease, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Every Which Way But Loose. I liked them all. Looks like many unseen great movies on your list!

Nice Louise! Some of my favorites on that list. What's up Doc? is on my top 10 list of all time and I've only seen The Court jester, The Pink Panther, Father Goose and Blazing saddles from your list, I enjoyed them all and am looking forward to checking out the rest. See some Marx-brothers on there and they are on my to-watch-list. Thanks again!

Thanks for the link and if I don't find it elsewhere I'll watch it there. I want subtitles since eng isn't my native lang and slangs or slurs can make it tough to hear, but I prefer eng subs so I don't miss the nuances and losing stuff in the translations. Thanks neuro!

I've only seen The General and Holiday which I liked very much from your second part and many looks very interesting there. Thanks again! Christmas-time is early this year. About becoming a Marxist: Their first films through "Duck Soup" were made at Paramount and are usually considered the best because the Brothers were allowed to run free and show their own particular brand of anarchic comedy. They are all stand-alone. Many people pick "Duck Soup" as their all-time favorite Marx Brothers. I put "Horse Feathers" at the top with "Monkey Business" a close second. When they moved to MGM to make "A Night At The Opera" they lost Zeppo and had a formula imposed on them. There would be a tighter plot and a pair of young lovers who the Marxes would help out. The conventional wisdom is that "Opera" and "A Day At The Races" were their best from that period and that - with one exception - as you go down the list, slavish adherence to the formula produced diminishing results, even though all of the movies have moments of brilliance. The exception is "Room Service," an experiment that had a Broadway hit comedy (a door-slamming farce) adapted for the Marx Brothers. Interesting and funny if not altogether successful. They never tried anything like that again. So, dive right in. Try a couple of the Paramounts then "A Night At The Opera."

I will certainly try to become a Marxist. Very nice and comprehensive explanation as well as a guide, mike! Thank you very much!
I'll watch them in release order and it's very nice to have your explanation on the side as I progress through the films.

To Be Or Not To Be (1942)This is simply one of the funniest films I have ever seen. When I was 16 (a long time ago, sigh...), this was re-released for a short time in a local art-house cinema, and my father insisted I go watching it with a friend. Well, teenagers don't normally line up to see 50 year old black and white comedies, but - man, was I glad I did! This is a pitch black comedy that feels as fresh today as it must have then; in fact, this must have been kind of a shock in 1942. There are no cheesy clean characters or cringe-worthy lines: this is a firework of fast, witty dialogue with an edge and the sexiest, cleverest (and most morally ambiguous) female protagonist I have ever seen in a film before the "New Hollywod" era. Even the structure and the way the story evolves are very modern; there are flashbacks and twists and turns that might be very common in contemporary films but must have seemed almost "avant-garde" at the time. The biggest fun, of course, is how Lubitsch takes the piss out of Hitler's blind, fanatic followers. I don't believe the Nazis have ever been mocked better than in this comedy masterpiece (and I only hope old Adolf has seen it, too). Mel Brooks' remake is not bad, but the original is simply killer. See it, and then see it again (and again).
Priceless. 10 out of 10

I hope you like it as much as I do; along with 'Life of Brian', 'Groundhog Day' and 'The Big Lebowski' it's one of my all time favorites comedies (all time favorite films, in fact).
