We all have our first time for stars that "broke out" in a certain movie for us. For example, the first time I ever knew Michael Cain (I live in the USA) was in Alfie (1966) / Lewis Gilbert This doesn't have to be movies from the last 50 years, for example there are old stars I only recently discovered and they may have started out in some silent movie....

My first memory of Michael Caine was in ZULU.
There was a relatively unknown film back in the mid1980's that had two actors I had not seen before who later had good careers. The film was DUET FOR ONE, which was an adaptation of a two-person play. Characters were added to flesh the story out when the film was made. One was a music student played by Rupert Everett. And playing the junk-collector lover of Julie Andrews was a nameless character played by Liam Neeson.
This film seems to have disappeared, probably due to a rights issue. About the same time the film was made, the actress who starred in the original play did a British TV version and she hated the movie version, probably because she wasn't the star, but was the wife of the playwright. I have a VHS released by MGM, but I don't believe it has ever been released on DVD.

I had never even heard of Maggie Smith until she was up for an Oscar in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969). After seeing her there, I went back to see her older movies later when they were available in the US. This is strange since I had pervisouly seen her in The V.I.P.s (1963) and she didn't register with me then.. For those who haven't seen Hot Millions (1968), I recommend it highly.. As for her role as Desdemona in Othello (1965) (seen much later), all I could think of --or worry about--was Laurence Olivier's blackface rubbing off in Smith's hands.

Emily Blunt in Sicario. When I now see her name in the film marquis, I will watch it.
Also, I remember seeing Benecio Del Toro in a James Bond film early in his career. He is a favorite of mine and another actor who I will watch in whatever film he is in...

And worked backwards and forward from there. Probably the first of Katharine as well. Loved them both at first sight and never was disappointed !

Barbara Barrie - One potato Two potato
Anthony Quinn- Zorba the Greek. I was amazed at the films he had made before Zorba. That was also my first notice of Alan Bates.

Ginger Rogers... As most people know, Ginger Rogers is mostly widely known for the TEN musicals she made with Fred Astaire... But, The first Ginger Rogers movie I saw was: "A Shriek In The Night" (1933). This movie was included in one of those cheapo "50 Classic Horror Movies" DVD sets that you sometimes find in the stores, especially around the holidays. I decided to give the movie a try, and while watching the film, Ginger Rogers caught my eye, and her acting made me want to see more of her films... Afterwards, I did watch those TEN Fred Astaire musicals... But, I have never been a fan of most musicals, and as expected, I didn't really find much about those films to enjoy... However, In My Opinion, the beautiful and talented actress, singer & dancer was one of the few highlights of those films... I can see why the studio kept casting her in the starring role, and why audiences kept buying tickets to see her films! Thankfully, Ginger Rogers made many other films that were NOT in the Musical Genre... I have since been able to see and enjoy many of those films and I have become a huge fan... If I had never seen the movie "A Shriek In The Night" (1933), I highly doubt, I would have ever seen any of her films, and Ginger Rogers would have never become one of my all time favorite actresses.

Steve Buscemi ('Parting Glances')
Samuel L. Jackson ('Coming To America' ... and then 'Sea Of Love', 'Goodfellas' etc.)
Been a fan of both men ever since childhood ...

Seriously Bat, from the moment I laid eyes on Sam Jackson, I said to myself, this awesome dude's bound to be a star. Same with Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito ... all of whom turned out to know each other, but those guys kind of remained character stars a la Charles Durning. Jackson's career went through the roof when he was contracted by Marvel Comics to be Nick Fury. I remember seeing him at the cinema looking for his arm in 'Jurassic Park' (1993) back when he was still flying under he radar!

petrolino I guess that Jurassic Park was the first time I noticed SL Jackson. ! Probably mostly because I don't see all that many "new" movies especially of the "tougher" varieties !
Star Predicting for me was River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke in Explorers. Both of those kids were special coming out of the gate and I actually noted that in my movie log book at the time !

First time I noticed Ethan Hawke was definitely 'A Midnight Clear' (1992). I'd have seen him in Peter Weir's 'Dead Poet's Society' (1989) but I've never enjoyed that movie.

I discovered Charles Durning as a veteran and he remains my all-time favourite character actor to this day. Amateur boxer, WW2 soldier, ballroom dance instructor, gambler and then some. More often than not, I find child actors annoying, especially the Macaulay Culkin kind (through no fault of his own).

Another interesting thread from Kijii.
COURAGE UNDER FIRE in 1996 -- I recall wondering about that young kid playing the damaged medic interviewed by Denzel Washington about Meg Ryan (not many can steal a scene from Denzel). I waited for his name in the end credits -- Matt Damon (try to remember that).
Then the following year Coppola gave him the lead role in THE RAINMAKER -- which positioned him for GOOD WILL HUNTING (as well as the important title character in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).
