I know my old pals President Ackbar™ and coldenhaulfield will disagree with me on this but I will never forgive Lucas for keeping the theatrical versions out of our hands for this long. I truly despise the special editions. And the BLUEBERRY WAFFLES at Dizney can go WAFFLE themselves with MAPLE SYRUP for not releasing them now that they have the rights. But he made a big to-do about releasing them "for the last time" in 1995 on VHS and then put them out again in 2006 on DVD. I have both. I guess he could've done the DVDs sooner, but he only put the other ones out in late 2004, IIRC. And then he sold it to Disney six years later. I guess he could've made them available on Blu-ray.

Those DVDs are letterboxed though. But better than nothing, I guess. I did have them, but sold them on eBay for 100 plus bucks about five years ago. I am DESPERATELY waiting for a blu ray release of the theatricals. There's actually a lot of issues with the special editions besides the obvious changes. The color grading is completely awful in all three movies, with crushed blacks, excessive blue tints and some all around bad visual choices that screwed up the picture.

What do you mean by "letterboxed"? In widescreen format? Seems like, with the acquisition of TCF, the only obstacle is Disney's desire to put them out.

That is the ONE THING I HATE about the special editions: the crazy ass added gold tone on threepio, and the stupid bright blue on artoo!

(With black bars on the top and sides, making the image really small)

And the excessive blues on Dagobah that make Yoda look terrible. The orange skin tones in the Death Star scenes in ANH. The way the Death Star walls were turned from grey to teal to "compliment" those new oranges. The crushed blacks in any dark scene. I could go on and on. There are video comparisons on you tube that show how bad it all is.
