As usual, I watch these movies long after they’re in theaters. And I just finished watching the last 30 min. of a movie on TV that bears absolutely no similarities to superhero films— Beauty and the Beast! But I thought it’d be best to watch Ragnarok, which got great reviews (here and from critics), before Netflix did away with it, as is Netflix’s wont. Anyway… I’m about 15 min. into this thing (phone call came in and I had to put it on pause), and I’m just not sure what to make of it. Beginning was a hoot, especially “Thor, son of Odin”/“Surtur, son of—a bitch”! And it’s fun to see Anthony Hopkins having fun, especially about a Shakespearean spoof called The Tragedy of Loki! But what’s weird is that the last Thor movie, or whatever it was ( Avengers? I can’t keep track), made this huge deal about how Loki was taking Odin’s place, and now in the first few minutes Loki’s exposed. Just feels that that big twist is kinda negated or something… And I would like to see Thor’s dreams as well as hear about them. Will chime in when I see some more.

Chris Hemsworth has this weird goofball-charming thing going on—a kind of Bob Hope vibe, in fact. I like that; I’d never seen that in any other Thor movie.
I’m not sure what to make of Benedict Cumberbatch’s American accent. Something like a cross between Hugh Laurie’s American accent and Robert Downey Jr.’s regular accent. It’s weird to see them talking about e-mail and computers while Cumberbatch is wearing medieval wizard garb.

Really? Odin just dies like that? In the original mythology, of course, he’s eaten by the Fenris Wolf (and Thor by the Midgard Serpent).

It's interesting you mentioned Hugh Laurie, because Doctor Strange begins very much with him acting like House MD. I imagine the impression was intentional.

Thor's dreams are kind of shown in Age of Ultron... Very briefly and a contrived way- but that's what they're referencing in Ragnorock. Sort of

Well, House is another egotistical curmudgeon based on Sherlock. I love how they bring Sherlock into his role here, music, address, all of it. Very similar.

Also, the 22A Bleaker Street thing is very similar to Sherlock's 2B Baker's Street. (Got the adresses wrong, I know lol)

Yeah, I imagine the impression was intentional, unless it’s just a Brit-classical-trained-actor-doing-American-accent thing? Though House was intended as a Sherlock Holmes expy, and Cumberbatch of course plays Sherlock… Now I just got a Star Wars (the…only one I’ve seen) vibe popping up when Thor’s on the planet of the weird mask people. And a Johnny Depp Jack Sparrow thing when the half-drunk girl popped up out of the spaceship. No, my critique will not just be comparing this to other movies!

The thing I enjoyed about Sacaar (the Grandmaster's planet) is that it's goofy as hell, but it also has some real authenticity to it. It's pure fun and silliness, yet it feels somehow very atmospherically tangible. Mainly due to the excellent set design and unique characters.

Hela (Hel in mythology, just sayin’…and half her face was a skull— Lord Death Man would approve)’s speech to all the warrior guys reminded me of Roger Ebert’s original review of Thor, when he describes Asgard: “It consists of towering spires and skyscrapers linked by bridges and buttresses and betraying no sign of a population, except when untold thousands of Asgardians are required to line up at attention like robotic Nazis to receive dictates from the throne of Odin (Anthony Hopkins).” Much more of a sci-fi vibe from this one. I’m not necessarily opposed to that, but the last Marvel flick I saw was Winter Soldier, which was completely different. Hela’s just killing everyone, ain’t she… Hey, “Pure Imagination”! That’s weird. Thor’s going on a psychedelic theme park ride. Gotta be the Disney side. Oops about the dreams, @forceghostackbar ! Guess that’s the downside of not seeing these movies in order.

Someone should do a new Road to… movie and have Hemsworth play the Bob Hope character. Question for the panel: who would play the Bing Crosby role?

Yep. Star Wars. An empire, minions, sword (lightsaber) fights, planet-hopping… Now I’m expecting Harrison Ford to pop up.
