we have no insulation in my building. there is nothing inbetween the walls/floors/ceilings. anyway.... I would not call them psychotic but I will call them weird. the first weeks I had moved in, the people above me were so loud -- stomping their feet around and that was regular walking to them... I had asked the super [just asking and he understood] if the people above me had any sort of medical situation -- like a lead foot or something. Then they dismantled a couch or something -- clanging and all -- at 2am. fk you. then they moved [thank god]. 00 then the new people weren't in yet but they were having the place worked on... sawing and whirring of electrical equipment at 7am on a weekend. doublefkyou. then the work was done and the new people moved in... so far so good. wife wouldn't take her stilettos off when she got home but they didn't keep weird hours so I was okay. then something happened and the toilet overflowed in their apartment... something that happens every once in a rare while [old fashioned flushometers] and what happened could happen when the unit water line has been turned off so that something can get worked on... so I know the toilet was leaking because I heard the dripping into my toilet. I run upstairs and start pounding on the door -- no answer. I leave a note and the guy calls me back relatively quickly. [he was in the laundry room] and he told me that everything was alright now -- and then told me he's basically an idiot. 'I was working at my computer and I heard water slowly running. I go to see and I see the toilet slowly overflowing. I say 'that's weird' and go back to my work.' dafuq? ? he didn't even put a towel down to mop up the mess!!! fkyou. fkyou. then comes the complaints TO ME FROM THEM about the noise[keep in mind they are above me and do not have rugs!] at 3pm, on a Saturday she has a problem. at 730pm she has a problem. at 8 on a Friday night she has a problem. fk you! the bylaws says we are 'allowed to live' but the noise has to be toned down at 11pm weeknights and 1am on weekends. I still had 3 1/2 hours on that weeknight and I had 5 hours on the last weekend problem. I started keeping a noise log and found them breaking the bylaws often. [keep also in mind that I don't have rugs either but the girl below me has NO NOISE PROBLEM FROM ME! she was shocked when she saw the big dog I had with me at the time [my parent's] she didn't even hear him!] then starts the 'drilling' sounds -- directly on the floor at all hours of the day and night.... once I went up there at like midnight during a weekday just to ask what they were doing... they were blowing up an air mattress and was wondering why that was bothering me. the motor was on the freaking bare floor! I was nice to them knowing that the noise would stop relatively soon but it didn't click with them that noise carries BOTH WAYS in apartment buildings! Then they have a kid and the kid is toddler age... running amok back and forth for hours on-end when it is nice enough outside to take him out to play. nope he runs amok above me. don't get me started on the 5am wake up call I got on sunday. him running amok for an hour! fk you. fk you! [not the kid, he's a baby and I would have understood if they got to him after a few minutes but a freaking hour???] then he grows up to a preschooler... still running amok upstairs. I see them take him outside to get fresh air and he does have little chums to play with in our building and the buildings connecting to ours. he doesn't run around with them! they go out side to sit and drink in the fresh air and sun but then the parents think it is okay to take him back upstairs to EXERCISE!! SCREW YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then they moved [thank freaking god] and now a young couple lives up there. they have odd hours -- like they get home at 10pm and start doing things you would do at 7pm. okay. I don't have much of a problem. I have met her and she seems nice. sometimes they get a little active after bylaw times but as long as they calm down soon or don't break out the chain saws I am okay with it.

The upstairs neighbors, I call them the 'floor people' because, while they seem to walk like normal human beings in the outside world, once they get into their apartment they take over every square inch of their floors with a psychotic vengeance and a series of incredibly bizarre noises, most of which I (want to) imagine are human sounds. They seem to do everything on the floor, including eating. Sounds a lot like my upstairs neighbors. I believe they build or repair furniture bec at any given time during the day, I hear hammering, drilling, heavy objects dropped on the floor and God knows what else. The people downstairs have a fabulous sound system which they used to blast at the highest level for hours. I politely asked the woman to it down and which she did by a few decibels but I can still hear it clearly when it's on.

I've done some research on this topic and pretty much it's a lifestyle that some people lead. For the most part they don't realize they're making that much noise, and if they did, they don't care. The attitude I've encountered is 'Well, I pay the rent here so...." There are two types of neighbors in this world, one goes home after a long day's work and has dinner, watches tv, gets ready for the next day, etc, etc, and the other goes home after a long day's work and fires cannons from their living room.

The guy who used to live directly above me was evicted after a couple of years of aggressive behavior and peeing and vomiting freely in his apartment. Someone told me what they found up there was so bad that some kind of social services at one point removed ALL his possessions and tore out the carpeting, basically leaving him with just walls and hard floor to apparently pee all over to his heart's content. . . . .
When he started threatening management staff members, and the thudding, crashing noises got too bad (I had to live with it right over my head) they finally got the guy thrown out. I've been hearing clean-up and refurbishment sounds up there now for longer than usual. Doesn't bear thinking about.

If I could give you 1,000 likes for this reply then I would.
I know exactly how you feel. I've had my fair share of mentally ill neighbors over the years, ranging anywhere from pesky noises in ungodly hours of the night/morning, all the way up to some guy murdering his wife over a domestic dispute.
For starters, the duplex that I was renting in 2007 had paper-thin walls. The only divider was insulation and supporting beams covered by drywall. You could literally hear a pin drop because management decided to remove the carpeting and lay down tiles. For six years and three different sets of neighbors, I had enough. My complaints did nothing to rectify the situation. I even contacted the owner and was ignored.
I also remember living in a crummy apartment complex in 2013 that didn't have a solid foundation. The units were connected to a creaky wooden floorboard. If somebody fell out of bed at 3 A.M., everybody and their mother would feel it. I almost cut my face shaving one time because some moron decided to throw a party, inviting all of their friends and relatives. I absolutely regretted weekends and holidays merely due to the fact that everybody stood home. There were times when I had to pack a bag and stay with my parents because it became insufferable.
The only place that was tolerable from 2015 - 2016 was a townhouse that was a sublet, even though the neighbors had a kid that would constantly scream in the parking lot. Noise-cancelling headphones took care of that. Unfortunately, the owner decided to sell but gave me ample time to find another apartment. Little did I know, the place that I now reside at is, by far, the worst of my living experiences.
A few months ago, I was walking to retrieve the mail. On my way, the above incident occurred when that nutbag shot and killed his wife. A few dozen officers responded with fully automatic weapons. Long story short, the moron committed suicide. I was approached by Law Enforcement and asked to fill out a witness report. We now have security patrolling the area on nights and weekends.
I'm convinced that, no matter where I go, there's always going to be at least one bad apple. It's unavoidable. People just don't have the common courtesy like they used to when I was a kid. Your neighbors used to be your friends. Everybody knew and respected each other. Even my grandparents back in the 1940s - 1960s attended yearly picnics with the neighborhood. You don't see that happening anymore, unless you live in an upscale area.
I don't buy the reviews off of Google. Everybody states these places are fantastic (5/5 stars). Well, my question to the people employed by the establishment is, if it's so damn wonderful like they claim, then how come they don't live here? I even asked one guy that tends to maintenance issues, and all he did was shrug his shoulders. Go figure.

My old apartment complex staff actually go onto those apartment review sites and argue with former tenants if they've given a bad review! They totally get into mud-slinging arguments on those sites. It's so unprofessional. Tenants are telling honest accounts of grievances I know are real, and the staff attack them publicly. My best experience was when I had a top-floor apartment -- no more stomping and dropping sounds above my head. The apartment also only had one shared party wall, and that ran along the back of the kitchen, bathroom and closet, meaning your actual living room and bedroom were separated audio-wise from your neighbors, and vice versa. The other three sides of the apartment were freestanding outside walls. You never really heard any neighbor sounds. It was the best place I lived in my adult life. The worst place had thin sheetrock for walls. It was like a cheap motel converted to studio apts. One time a SWAT team appeared at every door and asked us all to evacuate as there was a tenant they'd come for and "There may be gunfire." A SWAT team. It wasn't even a bad neighborhood. Just a bad complex in a nice neighborhood. The place I live now is the worst yet. The landlord/managers are meddling micromanagers and I feel like I'm treated like a damn child, not just a person paying rent. Most of the other tenants are vicious gossips twisting anything you happen to say in a passing chat or in anything they notice about you, even if you give them nothing to talk about, and there's a bad-apple STAFF member whom other tenants warn you about. It sucks here. But there's a housing crisis so bad in my area that there is nowhere else to move unless I uproot to a completely different area, and I don't desire that at this point, this is my home area.

I've never seen that happen, but I believe it. I knew there was something wrong with those reviews. It must be the staff claiming they live here or paid critics. Either way, it can't be checked for validity. Of course, the complex's website has 100% positive reviews. They wouldn't let complaints be publicly displayed. You'd figure these apartments would be divided by cement and rebar for safety concerns, but apparently not. You really shouldn't be able to hear somebody walking above you. Where I currently reside, you can't hear the person above/below you, but you can hear them while in the bathroom. It's a bit perturbing, especially if you're trying to do your business, LOL! And, that's a good idea; rent a corner apartment on the highest floor, hopefully with a party wall. At least you'll only have one neighbor to deal with. Unfortunately, I'm in between two since that's all that was available when I became a tenant. Lucky for me, they're quiet, but the people passing by on the balcony walkway are loud. Wow, that is bad! I'd be a bit shaky myself if that happened. I guess I lucked out because the other tenants here keep to themselves. The only real problem is that a lot of them are slobs. When they move, roaches start to appear. They also mistreat company property. They're filthy when it comes to sharing the laundromat. Other people have to use it too! Plus, they throw their trash out by the dumpster. Are they that lazy to walk an extra two feet and toss it in? They're so stubborn that they even smoke in the elevator. Maintenance is too lazy about doing anything about it. Once my lease is up, I'm out. I'm relatively close to my job but, it's worth the extra commute to live in a cleaner complex. I'm just worried about my security deposit. I've had problems in the past when landlords would make up any old excuse to keep it. One time I was blamed for a rat problem, and they kept close to $1k USD. I didn't put rodents in the attic; they were there when I moved in. I had to file a complaint with the local Public Safety office. It took several months to get it back. What a nightmare some of these places are.

I've had problems in the past when landlords would make up any old excuse to keep it. Yes, that same complex who argued with critical reviews (and probably posted fake good ones!) were notorious for keeping people's deposits and even charging them for damage that wasn't done, even after a move-out walkthrough inspection and the tenant taking pictures to show the condition of the apartment was good when they left. That was a lot of the complaints in the reviews. Some management can actually be corrupt like that. They seemed to get away with it over and over, though. As I sit typing this, I have a new neighbor somewhere either above or to the side of me, who has a habit of knocking or tapping out that "dum da-da dum dum, tap tap" (also known as "shave and a haircut, two bits"). Why he or she is doing this I do NOT know. Its infuriating. It seems to be in the kitchen area. Maybe they bake or cook and anytime they knock food of a mixing utensil they don't just tap it, they do that rhythm. AGGHHHH! Make it stop! Seriously, this is when I agree with Sartre's "Hell is other people."
