How do we know the vote isn't unanimous? Smoke colours. Right, but does it become unanimous by the time the guy is picked? Maybe not since that's a pretty high standard and not nearly as important as universal acceptance.
In any event, I'll drop a little knowledge about how this God thing works in the Bible. Whether the Catholic Church follows it or not is not relevant at this time since so many don't understand the basic concept.
People are allowed to disagree with God. It happens all the time in Scripture. No where does it say that we can't disagree with him and sometimes he even changes his mind.
However, God wants us to make proper decisions rather than tell us what to do.
The qualifications for a leadership position are outlined pretty clearly in Scripture, so there is no reason for God to actually be talking in among the group in the first place unless the Catholic Church specifically says he is and then it is perfectly OK to be skeptical of that if one is not Catholic.
The point is that if God's directions involve men choosing amongst themselves based on his standards, then the notion of disagreeing with him becomes moot.
