I live in the city. It's convenient. There are like 3 supermarkets within a radius of less than 100 meters and a few smaler grocery stores. There are also several lifestyle and utility businesses like restaurants, brothels and drug stores etc.
You do not need a car to survive.
Obviously not where you live, mate.
But when you live in rural South Australia, having a car in a necessity.
though sounding very similar in name, urban Eastern Austria and rural South Australia sound like very different places indeed.

And guess what?
We do have kangaroos!

There is a small locally owned grocery and a Walgreen's with food about 10 minutes away but a full-fledged chain supermarket is another 10 minutes passed them.

Five miles to village via a dirt road and up hills both directions. One IGA grocery store. Groceries cost twice what they are in the nearest actual "town" with choice of where to shop and that is 30 miles by car. Shopping is a planned operation !
and I have no kangaroos

We used to have Kangaroos in the Zoo outside of the city. But they were all killed to make room for Cheetahs 4-5 years ago.

Take me a 5 minutes walk to go to the grocery store. I almost live right next to it.

4 min drive, 2 without traffic & red lights. Open 8am-11pm, I go after work, self checkout. Shaves so much time off & 90% fewer idiot texting while shopping sheep in the way.

Veggies and Fruit are as close as the garden … several yards away from the back door.
Basement root cellar and pantry in the winter.

There's a corner store across the street from where I live, and a couple of supermarkets a 10-minute walk down the street.

Within a mile of me there is a Walmart Neighborhood Market, Publix and Winn-Dixie. Much like myself. There is a Winn-Dixie within walking distance of my home and up until last night there was a Publix even closer. They just closed for renovations which should take almost a year. I have a Wal-Mart three miles to the west and another Publix three miles to the east so it is an easy drive in either direction.

It's about 2 to 3 miles to a WalMart... I am not sure of the exact distance. I have to take a zig-zag route to get there... A Kroger is not more than 1/4 mile further down the road... I usually shop at both when I go grocery shopping to pick up most of what I want and need. There used to be a store only 1 mile a way... which belonged to a local chain, but the company filed for bankruptcy last year after being in business for over 80 years, and that company closed all the stores... I rarely shopped at that one though, it was one of their older and smaller stores, and I preferred going elsewhere... I feel sorry for the residents who lived right next to it and used to walk there to shop, and now have to travel so far away, just to get food...
Unfortunately, "Food Deserts" are becoming more common now...
No one I know will order Dairy, Meat, & Produce online and have it shipped from another state... and so... I'm not sure why, so many grocery stores are closing... I also don't understand why, when there is a store across the street, why anyone would waste time shopping online for anything!
I just don't get this online grocery shopping from AMAZON... Yes, The product itself may be cheaper, but you still have to pay an additional cost for shipping, which may actually make it more expensive... And then you have to wait a few days for delivery. (But, I'm hungry NOW!)...
As for online grocery shopping from your local store with pickup/home delivery... That doesn't explain why local stores are losing business and closing...

Just 1 mile. And although I live in suburbia, I like the fact that are a lot of useful stores nearby (like within a 3-mile radius).

Pretty close actually. There's a Jewel and another grocery store about 25-30 minutes from my house if I just walk. About 10 minutes by car.

Yeah, now I've become spoiled by Walmart online grocery shopping. I go to Publix for bogo or special items I want.
