I'm including major comedies that I didn't laugh much at, but which I realize others do. In fact, over half of these are ones I don't think are that funny, but many do (Strange Glove, Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Porky's, Animal House all bore me, for example). I even include Duck Soup, which I think is one of the weaker Marx Brothers movies, certainly with more forced comedy, but I believe others actually do think it's great. Can't understand why anyone would laugh at Porky's or Animal House, two muddled bits of boredom, but I include them for whatever audience they have.
So, picking a wide variety. The reason there aren't many "new" comedies is simply because new comedies are mostly just forced works made by groups of people "voting" for what to use, and by definition, group decisions are going to be both predictable and forced.

I don't think I picked twelve. Probably around 8.
I preferred Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein to the others, probably because I like those monster movies as a child.
Agree on Duck Soup. Very iconic, though. Contains the mirror scene, and the battle scene where he has the flower pot on his head with Grouchos face painted on. Funny stuff.
Not nitpicking, but, IMO? Something by the Coens, Chaplin, WC Fields and Buster Keaton would be on my list.
"Lebowski", "The Circus", 3-4 Fields films form a 'pick 'em', and "The Cameraman".
"The Circus" is probably Chaplins purest feature comedy. The laughs are very broad.
Obviously, hard to pick 12 from the history of film, or even 50. Good job!

Interesting to see The Mask on this list, probably Carrey's least funny film. To be fair, me and two chicks rented it back in high school and ended up having a threesome with it on in the background, so I can't say I remember much if anything of the film.

Nice to see After the Fox on the list. Great Peter Sellers film. Victor Mature was great as well.

A Google search for "funniest movie ever" yields AIRPLANE! as the first result.

In striving for a cross section, I sacrificed a great comedy. SURELY, it will be missed. surel As for Marilyn. Not sure why Easy Money would be mentioned. And I don't know how one can say "no Mel Brooks" when Mel Brooks is clearly there with Blazing Saddles and History of the World. I even included one of the 3 Stooges for the cross section. Personally, I'd rather knock it out to include Airplane!.

A few that could've, and, IMO should've, been listed: Caddyshack Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Young Frankenstein Zombieland ( you've probably figured out I'm a horror fan) The 40 year Old Virgin
Not sure if Easy Money would make my top 12, but it's definitely worth a mention.

No Airplane!, no Modern Times, no Kingpin, no Ghostbusters and no Christmas Vacation, but you make room for the terrible Vacation (2015) and The Pink Panther remake? Okay then.
I don't understand the point of polls that ask for other people's 12 funniest movies ever made. People have such different tastes and their are so many funny comedies that no poll will have even close to everyone's funniest films.
Why not just ask people what the 12 funniest movies they have seen are without a poll? That would make a lot more sense.

People have such different tastes and their are so many funny comedies that no poll will have even close to everyone's funniest films. Why not just ask people what the 12 funniest movies they have seen are without a poll? That would make a lot more sense. Quite sorry about Airplane and Ghostbusters. Pure oversights. The others, well, I really felt their "type" of humor was well represented in the poll. But I am sorry that worthy ones like Airplane and Ghostbusters were left out. I'm no fan of Strange Glove, but it looks like that one is running away with this. For some reason, I felt the comedy was forced and predictable, although some bits were well done. A lot of it depended on reaction to the actors, particularly Sterling Hayden. My older brother, born in 1953, saw more of the old hero movies with Sterling, and this was funnier to him, but for those of us born in 1956, he and actors like him were never depicted in good lights, and he was the epitome of what a bad guy in the movies would be, so his turn around was "flat" and "predictable" to us. Later generations, I think, just followed along because they thought it made them cool. I think it's okay, overall, and certainly funnier than 95% of the comedies in the last 30 years, but it isn't in my top list. I intended to put in Airplane and Ghostbusters. Airplane was a total "forget", and Ghostbusters, well, it involved a lot of the SNL type humor and crowd, and I think I included enough of those, but still was an oversight, as I should have left off one of the lesser deserving, but maybe not less deserving, as Mask inspired a menage a trois (allegedly, and I have no reason to doubt it)

So far, a dozen people are riding that nuclear bomb in the sky all the way down just to make it the number one movie.

Can I choose movies that aren't in the poll? If so, can they be animated?
