I remember this double album was in nearly all cheap bins in the mid-1980s, nut since I had never heard of the movie I didn't buy it. When I finally did see it in the early 1990s I thought it was really entertaining. Ray Walston was fun too as Mr Hand.

I love Damone's advice to Rat as to what to do on a date:
All right, now pay attention. First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. [Stands next to a life size cut-out of pop singer Deborah Harry.] "Oh, Debbie. Hi."
Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice."

I never knew Nicolas Cage was in this movie! Yes, he's one of Judge Reinhold's buddies in line with him to register for school. Cage can also be seen as one of the cooks at the burger place where Reinhold works (you can see him nervously look down when the customer argues with Reinhold). He's also at the football game clapping and cheering his team.

The movie gets better with every viewing. Great DVD commentary from Cameron Crowe and Amy Heckerling. Love the Jackson Browne theme song also

On a glum note, Lana Clarkson, the woman Phil Spector was convicted of killing, also appears in this.

I never knew Nicolas Cage was in this movie! He was credited as Nicolas Coppola. He had very brief screen time.

I thought the film was OK but felt like a chore to sit through. Might check it out again some time.

Sean Penn was insanely miscast in this. But who knew he could be so funny? How can he be seriously considered to be "mis-cast" in this picture ? It was only his second film appearance. He had no established "persona" that came into effect when films were being cast. Ye gods and little fishes ! He was FUNNY and seemed to be enjoying the role immensely !

Nicolas Cage was originally considered for the role of Brad Hamilton, but the studio thought his performance was too dark. Cage was 17 at the time, and could not work as many hours as 18-year-olds. Nicolas Cage originally lied about his age so that he could get a bigger part. Nicolas Cage appears under the name Nicolas Coppola for the first and only time.
Sean Penn improvised during his takes and tried to find ways to aggravate actor Ray Walston, who played Mr. Hand, even off camera. He also did things to get genuinely startled reactions from the extras who played his classmates through unexpected improvisations.
Christopher Reeve was considered for the role of Jeff Spicoli. Other assorted trivia

When the class goes to see the dead bodies, the guy on the left is director Martin Brest (Midnight Run, Scent of a Woman).
