petrolino that song, "Teenage Dirtbag" was everywhere in the early 00's, Wheatus were such one-hit wonders! Love the song though. The young guy I work with at the moment, who's 20 years younger than me, tells me they play 'Teenage Dirtbag' every week in a nightclub he goes to. He says everybody loves it on a Friday night. I haven't heard it in years, I recall it was used in several movies back then. Nice to know it lives on!

I love Damone's advice to Rat as to what to do on a date: All right, now pay attention. First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. [Stands next to a life size cut-out of pop singer Deborah Harry.] "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." "When it comes down to makin' out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV." π Rewatching it right now! π

Wonderful movie. Love the Jackson Browne song. It gets better with each viewing. It made Sean Penn a star. The movie actually had many future stars, including Forest Whitaker, and a brief appearance of Nicholas Cage. Amy Heckerling is an underrated director. She is very good with comedies, including Clueless and Look Who's Talking. The DVD commentary of Fast Time with her and Cameron Crowe is one of the most fun commentary to listen to.

Are there different versions out there? Seems to me I saw a version with a character getting in a family way and one without it.

I like it less and less on rewatch and not sure why. I actually didn't like it all that much on the first viewing. I did not get it, and it seemed silly and an excuse to show topless girls. Once I understand the style and what the movie tried to do and start getting the jokes, I started to appreciate the movie, a very well made comedy. Sean Penn was very funny.

Never seen it. But I remember the "hey bud, let's party" ads.

It is a textbook example of the movie shot entirely for the Male Gaze (The Male Gaze is a theory that visual media is essentially created from a heterosexual male's point of view that objectifies and sexualizes women ... The term 'male gaze' was first used by Laura Mulvey in her 1975 essay titled, 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema') - thank you, Google search.
Not that I was complaining at the time when the movie almost made my head explode. But I have grown and matured just so-o-o-o much since then.
Thought I was drop that little bomb into the middle of this love fest just for fun.

These were my observations while rewatching:
* The Go-Go's "We Got the Beat" is a perfect choice for the opening credits. * This opening montage at the mall is too perfect. It was probably not given too much thought then, but now it's a time capsule of 1982 that is so spot on. * You could smoke upstairs in the movie theater back then? * This kid is wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey, mad respect! π¨π¦ * Jennifer Jason Leigh would never look this innocent again. * That guy looks nothing like Richard Gere. * Twenty-six year old guys trying to pick up teenage girls was not considered as creepy then as it is now. * Judge Reinhold would never receive top billing above any of these people ever again. * Eric Stoltz, Anthony Edwards and Sean Penn are the most iconic surfer trio in cinema history. * Is that Copeland from Police Academy? * Don't f@#k with Forest Whitaker's car! * "This guy's been stoned since the third grade." * Spicoli is Sean Penn's best role, without question. * Mr. Vargas just switched to Sanka, have a heart. * Stacy is gonna be somebody's baby tonight...in a dugout! * Brad is a tool. * I'm identifying too much with Mr. Hand. π * "What are you people...on dope?" * Nicolas Cage has the smallest of roles as the fry guy at All-American Burger. π * That cheerleader needs to calm down. * Brad's life is spiraling downward. * Debbie Harry cameo, sorta. * "When it comes down to makin' out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV." * There's a lot of Christmas in this movie. A new holiday tradition is born! π * Which one is Cameron Crowe? * Totally shipping Rat and Stacy at this point. * "People on ludes should not drive." * Ridgemont rules, Lincoln drools. * Trout dogs? Clamwiches? Oh, Hell naw!!! * Damone sings the theme from Jaws. π¦ * Brad is having private spanky time. Linda walks in. Wouldn't it be weird if these were the same characters played by Judge Reinhold and Phoebe Cates in Gremlins? * Pizza delivered in class. Now that's balls! π * Stacy is a fickle woman. * Brown refrigerators were still lingering around from the 70's. * Damone is gonna be somebody's baby tonight. * This pirate life is not for Brad. * Cheap Trick were pretty great. * Stacy is gonna have somebody's baby tonight. * Brad has more depth than I originally thought. * I thought it was bad when our class toured that sewage treatment plant, at least we were never taken to watch an autopsy! * We never get to see Linda's boyfriend, Doug. * All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz and I'm fine." πββοΈ * James Russo is robbin' the convenience store.

For me I believe its a mixture of seeing it so much combined with less rewatch value, not as much to pick up on at all.

That was one of the two scenes I found very interesting on first viewing. The other was the Jennifer Jason Leigh scene at The Point. Upon repeat viewings, I realized the movie is more than boobs and gain my appreciation.

Interesting to note that out of it came three best actor Oscar winners -- Sean Penn(x2), Nicolas Cage, Forest Whitaker -- and one best supporting actress nominee, Jennifer Jason Leigh. Also notable was that one of the sidekicks of Spicoli was the big screen debut of Eric Stoltz who I thought should have been nominated for Mask. He was also very funny in Pulp Fiction. Another big screen debut was one of the doctors in the cadaver class played by Martin Brest who went on to become an Oscar nominated director for Scent of a Woman.

Are there different versions out there? Seems to me I saw a version with a character getting in a family way and one without it. There were 2 cuts. The second was a tv/cable version which used the deleted scenes. But I think this cut toned down the adult themes, obviously for tv? A few deleted scenes; Thereβs around 18-19 deleted/tv scenes, which are all loaded on YouTube.
