Alex Cora could win 117 games in his first season and not win Manager of the year. If Bob Melvin wins the AL West with this rag-tag circus, heโd get my vote.

I was in reddit saying Melvin has a good shot and practically got attacked for not thinking Cora was a shoo in. But the Sox were supposed to do well. The A's were supposed to be in last. They may win the west. They are playing Houston this weekend.

Since a manager's role is relatively superficial to results, I'd say it's better to give it to the guy whose team overachieves the most, which is what the OP suggests. I could probably manage this Red Sox team to triple digit wins.

I would give it to either Kevin Cash or Bob Melvin.

This exact Red Sox team would be around 92-94 wins if John Farrell was still the manager. Of that I have no doubt.

I would go with Bob Melvin, the Aโs werenโt expected to be nearly this good and theyโve had an excellent year. Also Kevin Cash deserves consideration, the Rays have had a very good year despite not having a lot of talent and playing in the same division as the Sox and Yankees.

The Reds Sox in the last two years of John Darrell's tenure were an underachieving lot. Yeah, a team that won two AL East crowns CAN underachieve. Any game that needed heart, gumption or balls, forget it. If the Sox were down by any more that four runs, game over. Any game like the first game of the August Yankee series of the Brandon Phillips comeback against the Braves never would have happened last year. This team, polar opposites. Between losing Pedroia for the year and all the other injuries, this team would be 10.5 in back of the Yankees if it was 2016. JD Martinez had been a big asset (duh), but the attitude has to be Alex Cora.

I watched that Mookie Betts 18 pitches Grand Slam AB. It was awesome. I don't get that sense with the Yankees team. The Red Sox can beat a team in all kinds of way. The Yankees relies too much on the HR. It still comes down to the team that is the hottest in October.
If the Yankees makes it out of the Wild Card game, I wish there is a way so that the Red Sox and the Yankees, two team with the best record, would face in the LCS instead of LDS. The basketball had that problem a few years ago when the two best teams in the West played in round one. They fixed it. They could do something similar in baseball.

I thought the Yankees didn't have a chance last year and they came a whisker away from the pennant. The team is finally getting healthy.
Biggest question for me is Gary Sanchez. He looked like the next great Yankee catcher last year. Maybe not a Yogi, but in the discussion with Posada, Munson, Ellie Howard. Now he's a bumbling fool. Is it just a bad year, injuries or does he have a case of the Yips?

I actually like the Yankees team from last year more than this year. They had many players that do come up big, like Starling Castro and Todd Frazier. I thought they had a good shot of beating the Astros. This year, Andujar is the one that most time you can count on. I am not too crazy about Stanton in big situation, nor is Voit and forget about Bird. Sanchez is not the Sanchez last two years. He seem to gotten a gotten lazy and fatter than what he is. He does not bust out on base. He did came up clutch in a few moments early in the year. Maybe he is not completely healed. Judge, and especially Chapman, need to be healthy. Boone seems clueless in handling the bullpen without Chapman. One thing for sure, Aaron Boone will not be the AL Manager of the Year.

At this point Melvin should be MOY but the Red Sox are going to win well over a 100, even though they were predicted to make the post season before the season, it's an east coast team, so Cora wins it. But it should be Melvin.
