...and were dead either as of the first episode or early in the series.
For example, Arnold Rimmer in "Red Dwarf" dies in the first episode, but continues throughout the series, mostly as a hologram, then is revived later.

Mozart in the Jungle had dead characters giving the maestro advice all the time, particularly Mozart.
LOST had this happen often but in particular with Jack's dad..The reason he was on Oceanic Airlines Flight 815.

Multiple characters in the original Dark Shadows (1966-71) are dead -- and undead.

Northern Exposure has a Native American ghost, 'One-Who-Waits' (Floyd Red Crow Westerman), who only appears to Ed Chigliak as a spirit guide. One-Who-Waits usually hangs around the local diner because he likes to smell the food.

I have all but the final season on DVD. Unfortunately, the DVDs don't have all the original songs. You've still got the better format. I also still have a t-shirt which says "Ed Chigliak Films".

I sort of disagree with referencing LOST. Most of those "Ghostly" characters, such as "Jack's Dad", were really either Jacob or "The Man In Black"... However, as I recall, Hurley, had conversations with his dead friends.
This one is not an "early in the series" example, but... In the original Transformers "Generation One" cartoon series from the 1980s, Starscream was destroyed by Galvatron, and later his "Ghost" played an important role in a couple of stories. Later, Unicron would give him a new body... But he was shot again. I can't recall if he was killed. He appeared in an episode of a Sequel TV Series, and I think he was a ghost, once again.
Does Murdoc on the original MacGyver TV Show count?... He would appear on about one episode per season, and would try to kill MacGyver. But he would apparently "DIE" at the end of the episode. Somehow he would miraculously survive his DEATH, and then he would comeback to try to kill MacGyver again, and would "DIE" at the end of that episode... This continued through the entire series... No one was ever sure if he was really gone for good or not.

The TV series Veronica Mars. In the first episode we found out that the character of Lilly Kane (played by Amanda Seyfried) had been murdered, and she turned up sporadically throughout the series via the hallucinations of her best friend, Veronica, and her brother, Duncan Kane. Sometimes she was sporting the head wound that she had when her body was discovered... And sometimes not...
