Do they give police guns in London? Not regular coppers, but the police around the Palace of Westminster are armed.

Because the UK doesn't have much gun crime. Therefore the prevailing wisdom is that arming the police on a routine basis will simply esculate. The coppers don't want guns and the public doesn't want them to have guns. All major forces in the UK have armed response units.

Say in a stern voice "please put that down sir"?

I know I don't.

Yes that's right Thor, if the police who weren't carrying guns were rushed by someone with a knife or machete they would either die or be seriously injured. Why police in the UK do this willingly is what is baffling. Yes I know it doesnt happen often but it still happens.
It's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.

Those aren't the only two options. What about having a gun and using it unnecessarily?

The UK is not the US

Absolutely. If you look closely, you can see that George and Dim have handguns in "A Clockwork Orange" after they have joined the police. Of course, they didn't need them to break up a motley collection of bums, take Alex into custody, and make sure that he stays cured, but they had the guns just in case they needed them.

Thought goes out for families and friends of people who lost their lives. Very unfortunate.

Having police armed at all times would just lead to an arms race with criminals. Gun crime is very rare in the UK and we want it to stay that way.

It's quite a difficult one though, as you say armed police leads to more armed criminals, but if the criminals are already armed it's a difficult situation if the police are unarmed. It's really a catch 22 situation.

We have specialised armed police units to deal with armed criminals and even with how rarely they're called into action now there are still controversial actions by them (Jean Charles de Menezes, Mark Duggan). Imagine what would happen with the average bobby on the street being armed. There would be the possibility of more bad shootings, more chances of the policeman's gun being taken and used on themselves. And this in my mind would lead to more criminals arming themselves.
