Her character's code name is Mara.
TEXT:
The report added: "It is said to be an escape sequence and Keri will be doing a lot of scenes in a cockpit set piece. The second half of this scene will be shot in mid-October. We do know that the code name of Keri Russell’s character is Mara."
Mara Jade in the Extended Universe was Emperor Palpatine’s personal assassin. She then fell in love with Luke Skywalker.
And, guess what? Mark Hamill has just spoken out about the possibility that Luke had a romance or relationship.

Mara Jade is one of my favorite EU characters.
I do not trust Disney and JJ with her.

what sense does Mara Jade make after Luke is dead and introduced in the third act…? Besides cheap fanservice like look who we got here next to old Leia footage reused.
Plan 9 from Outer Space gets real...

Plan 9 from Outer Space gets real... Hmm. This will probably go nowhere, but what if Keri Russell was used in flashback scenes to show that Luke had a kid somewhere in the galaxy? What if Abrams was trying to continue the Skywalker name through Mara Jade?

This makes it clear to me that they're desperate after TLJ divided the fanbase and underperformed at the box office. Also, it didn't help that Carrie passed away and Luke and Ackbar were needlessly killed off.

I'd have been ok with this 'original' idea if it had been used properly...like in the first or second movie in the trilogy...

what sense does Mara Jade make after Luke is dead and introduced in the third act…? Besides cheap fanservice like look who we got here next to old Leia footage reused. Plan 9 from Outer Space gets real... I guess they could either have flashbacks with a de-aged Luke/Mark H. (And possibly archival footage of Leia, Han, anyone else from the originals), explaining how they had a kid and Mara took her off to Jakku for a special mission and never came back, be it that she's Mara Jade taking she & Luke's kid-Rey with her, to explain Rey's being a Skywalker AND her ending up on Jakku. OR they could have that she was the Emporer's assassin and she had a daughter, which is what pulled her away from the Emporer, and Luke found her and befriended her despite all that had happened with the Empire/Rebels and she brought her baby with her. Or Keri R. could, still in flashbacks, be someone important to the early Resistance or even one of Luke's former padawans, one who escaped Kylo's massacre to be one of his knights but at some point after, defected and has lived in hiding ever since to keep out of the hands of Snoke and Kylo, until Rey & co. show up at her doorstep in the modern day. Keri R. does have one of those faces that it wouldn't be hard to make her look like she's in her early 20s for flashbacks, then change the make up to make her look like she's her actual age- but rough for her actual age (cause she looks pretty dang good and doesn't look her actual age) as if she'd lived hard- maybe add a couple scars or a bit of roughness to her skin as if she had lived in a frozen wasteland or desert planet for a long time without a good moisturizer. If they don't have any flashbacks with her, she could simply be Rey's mother, a friend of Leia's, some high ranking official in the First Order, a Resistance spy, a friend of Maz's, or she is somehow a new, ranking member of the Resistance as it rises from the ashes of Crait.

NONE of it makes sense. It's all stupid. Who wants to see any of these characters so far after their Prime? Not me. Maybe Episode 9 starts with Luke waking up from a bad dream that was TFA and TLJ!
