Killing a popular character is always a tough decision. For TV and movie writers, death is a great way to build tension. Every once in awhile, a popular character has to die to remind viewers that death can happen. However, if a character is too well-liked, then the audience might revolt. Here are fan favorite characters who were originally meant to die, only to be saved by their popularity. www.looper.com/5803/fan-favorites-originally-supposed-die/

John Rambo was meant to die at the end of First Blood but Stallone already had sequels in mind so that was not going to happen. Rambo was also a lot more unhinged in the book but again, make him more likable and sequels will come.

On Breaking Bad, Jesse Pinkman was supposed to die in season 1. Vince Gilligan also considered killing off that fat bitch Skyler in the final season. Too bad he didn't.

Jack Shepard was supposed to die in the very first episode of Lost (killed by the Monster), and the "main" character was to have been Kate. Instead it was rewritten, and the pilot of the jet was who the Monster killed instead.

Lafayette was supposed to die at the end of season 1 of "True Blood" but he became a fan fav for the show and the people behind the show liked him so much they kept him on... he always annoyed me in season 1 so I never understood the love for him.
Dewey was supposed to die in "Scream" originally but once David Arquette was cast the character was re-written to be younger and more likable. Craven was not sure if audiences would like seeing him die so 2 versions of the end were filmed, the version with him dead and the version with him alive. Test audiences didnt test well to Dewey dying so he was kept alive...
Jeff Goldblums character was supposed to die in Jurassic Park originally but after Goldblum was cast they kept him alive and even put him in the sequel.
Riggs (Mel Gibson) was supposed to die in the end of Lethal Weapon 2. The bad guy Arjen Rudd was supposed to shoot him in the back and he dies in Danny Glovers arms. Producers were sure it would be a huge hit like the first and wanted to make more Lethal Weapon movies and make it a franchise so they stepped in and changed the ending and kept Riggs alive. Shane Black was so upset they changed his screenplay he left and refused to work on 3 or 4.
Ellen Ripley was supposed to die in "Alien" with the alien ripping her head off. The producers felt that the ending was too dark for an already bleak film so they had her survive and the alien die
Julianna Margulies was supposed to die in the Pilot episode to ER, but test audiences loved her so much they kept her alive.
Damian Lewis was supposed to die at the end of "Homeland" season one but the producers wanted to see his and Clare Danes characters work together more for one more season so they kept him alive.
Oscar Isaacs character "Poe" was supposed to die in "The Force Awakens". The scene in the first act where he crashes in the desert was supposed to be his death. Oscar Isaac met with JJ Abrams and told him he wasn't okay with it as he dies a lot in films and didnt wanna be killed in a huge franchise right away, so Abrams let the character live. So if someone else were cast the character would be dead. That is probably why Poe is MIA for over an hour in the movie after the crash and then suddenly appears and does nothing for plot sake.
Pinocchio was supposed to die. LOL. He was supposed to be made without a conscience and kill Jimminy Cricket with a hammer and be moving wood with no conscience so he does bad things and doesn't realize they are bad. In the end 2 bandits capture him and hang him. Disney decided to do away with all of that for obvious reasons

The should have killed Brody at the end of Season one. They dragged that out way too long.

The should have killed Brody at the end of Season one. They dragged that out way too long. Funny thing is that they did want to kill him at the end of s02, and this time Showtime didn't let them- Damien Lewis had turned into an Emmy winning star, so they wanted to have him around longer.

Season three was the worst season of the show and I think it was in large part due to Brody. This is no fault of Damien Lewis. He is excellent, but they milked it for all it was worth and Season 3 was a mess.

Strangest I've seen is Bobby Ewing in Dallas returning from the dead after a whole season. They explained it by saying that Pamela Ewing had dreamt the whole thing.
Death...
Resurrection...

Yes.... but to be fair they never wanted Duffy to leave the series. He chose to leave to do another show and when it failed and wanted to come back they were more than willing to let him back and had the whole season be a dream
