They offered him the deal in March, he didn't want it then, and then he finally decided to accept it in May. You can't wait 2 months to accept a deal. They probably spent that money somewhere else.

But why let him accept the deal then? According to him he accepted it and was let go a bit after? I don't know.
I agree however that it did take him a long time to accept which may have played a role in the firing if the show had already moved on not wanting to wait for his decision.
