Club was down the sh*tter before he arrived. Heavy FFP fines, like, erm, £40m. No new players. Good players sold. Chairman who comes and goes when he feels like it.

But McClaren took the job. And the club took him on despite his mediocre to average record in management. I'm of the feeling that Board and coach are deserved of one another. They go well together; they must do if they were equally agreed on such an appointment. Could Fernandes, whose Tune Group, still owns more than half of the club, step back into the fray? You can't imagine him being too thrilled with his West London investment at the moment.

But, take heart, Stevo. Mark Hughes, surely your proven spiritual buddy in the Management Win Rate Percentage Community, got off to a scary start at QPR in January 2012 but managed somehow to keep them up by a single point over Owen Coyle's Bolton. Oh but wait, Hughesy didn't lose his first four in charge...sorry, mate - beat Wigan and Birmingham next and you're in for a while longer; alternatively anything less than 4 points and you're out, I reckon. Between those two games, you've got Bristol Rovers in the League/EFL/Checkatrade/Cariboo/some Mickeyf*ckingMouse Cup or other. Be interesting to see how ye approach that one, throw on the reserves or play it as though there were three points up for grabs instead of a complimentary can of benzoate and caffeine-ridden Hi-NRG 4U. You're getting enough restless nights as it is.
