Anyone else like these flicks? They're two of my favorite sports movies. Just listening to Bill Simmons podcast here in the office and Jason Bateman (who starred in Necessary Roughness) basically said it's a terrible film. I often wonder how actors would react if I were to have a conversation with them and reveal that I enjoy one of their lesser respected films. I guess I know how Bateman would react to Necessary Roughness.
Necessary Roughness was good enough to spawn a knockoff 9 years later in The Replacements, which I also enjoy. But for me, Necessary Roughness is the better of the two. It's been a couple of years since I watched NR, but I just caught Replacements on cable over the summer and a few things stood out to me:
- They make multiple references to football being a rough sport, which is 'why girls don't play the game.' I don't think that line makes it into the final cut in 2018.
- Head injuries and the brutality of the game in general are viewed in generally a comedic fashion. That definitely doesn't make it into the final cut in 2018.
- One of the stripper cheerleaders watches the players practice and says, "Look at all these yummy monkeys." This DEFINITELY doesn't make it into the final cut in 2018.
- A scene revolves around two players' racism toward the Japanese Center, and they're supposed to be the good guys. That stuff really doesn't hold up well today.
Other than that, it's still a fun flick. How does anyone else feel about either of these films holding up all these years later?

Was Necessary Roughness the one with QB Scott Bakula, coaches Hector Elizondo and Robert Loggia, and sexy placekicker Kathy Ireland? If so I like that one better. Thought The Replacements was lame despite the always awesome Gene Hackman. Keanu Reeves played essentially an older Johnny Utah if he never joined the FBI.

Is it funny or sad that Sinbad was probably the biggest star (at least trendiest at the time) in that film at its time of release and he's the one you didn't mention?

From the synopsis: What's a 'standard children baseball squad?' Also, is Jon Heder still alive?

I have no memories of Sinbad being in that movie but I haven’t seen it since around the time it came out. I vividly remember Kathy Ireland in it. At the time when she was in the SI Swimsuit Issues the only woman who topped her in my book was Kelly Bundy. But it wasn’t a bad movie otherwise. Like a poor man’s Major League but football.
