Lots of times they are put downs, but not necessary have to do with sexual orientation. But over the years it they have sort of loss their meaning now that being gay is more acceptable.

Actually the opposite is true. "Gay" used to mean just homosexual. Now in slang it means inferior or weak, as when some giddy fool says something like "that's so ghey". It's become a slur word. |
