Just my opinion, of course, but I thought The Long Goodbye was dreck and the quality of the writing in Gone Girl was appalling.
I was beginning to think they were going to blank James A Michener entirely. I'm not saying he's the greatest writer, but you're looking for books set in states and he's got books about basically the entire history of Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, etc.
Carrie is King's best Maine book? It's good, but I don't think it's the best.

No Confederacy of Dunces for Louisiana?
And for them to have no mention of any of the Rabbit novels under Pennsylvania is unforgivable.

California - I can't argue with Steinbeck's brilliant East of Eden but I also enjoyed Storm by George R. Stewart
Illinois - glad to see Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine listed
Iowa - W.P. Kinsella wrote two fine fantasy baseball novels set in Iowa, The Iowa Baseball Confederacy and Shoeless Joe (made into the film Field of Dreams)
Louisiana - Interview with the Vampire? I mean, it's a good enough novel but nowhere near as inspired as A Confederacy of Dunces, which lives and breathes Louisiana, especially New Orleans and a wonderful cast of colorful characters
Maine - Carrie is a great choice, my favorite King novel
Missouri - Gone Girl is a typical page-turner
New York - The Great Gatsby is a solid choice
Oklahoma - no Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls?
I discovered I haven't read many of the novels listed.
