What are your thoughts and opinions on "Remember The Titans"? I personally loved it, but feel the racial tension was almost non existent. Also, wasn't there a character pretty much openly gay that everyone seemed fine with?

Pretty boring, impersonal and cliche imo.
This pretty much sums up the Disney sports movie for me.

I thought it was just okay. I remember when Disney was doing a whole slew of those movies in the early 2000s like Miracle, Glory Road, The Rookie, Invincible, and The Greatest Game Ever Played (remember that one?).

Its probably the only one on that list that never gets air time. The rest always get played on cable TV, especially Remember The Titans, Invincible and Glory Road

I liked the movie when I watched it 15 years ago. I don't know how I would feel about it now.

I remember it being a really good sports film. Denzel Washington and Will Patton gave solid performances in it, and I was shocked years later that Ryan Gosling was in it. It also had a good soundtrack to it. However, I was a little disheartened to learn that most of the film, especially the racial tensions, was fictionalized.

It was okay but predictable - but I remember thinking: This is bullshit. High schools were integrated in the early 1960's, not '71. I WAS IN high school in the early 70's and I didn't remember any racial stuff going on. There was some of course, but not like the movie portrayed it.
Sure enough, I looked into the "true story" claim and I was right - it was all made-up Disney bullshit. They took the very basics of truth - there really was a high school team that went undefeated in '71 named the Titans - and made up a racial morality tale that never happened.
A bit more jaded, a bit wiser.

Also, wasn't there a character pretty much openly gay that everyone seemed fine with? I believe that the character nicknamed "Sunshine" was named that because he came from California and sort of dressed like a hippie. But he was a damn good quarterback, he just needed a coach that would give him the focus like Denzel Washington's character did. And like Lewis (the fat guy who sung Motown songs), he hung out with the black players with ease unlike Bertier. Except Sunshine had to learn firsthand what the black players had to deal with even if lawful segregation "officially" ended. I thought the movie was okay, thought it was a part of Disney's assembly line of fact based sports movies. On that note, they had no business touching the movie Miracle based on the "Miracle on Ice". Not with the knowledge that coach Herb Brooks was a foul mouthed individual.

Don't really have any thoughts or opinions on it. It is what it is. Pretty sure I saw it in high school about five times. Whenever a teacher didn't have something to teach, that was like the go-to movie to turn on.

See what I mean? People still believe this bullshit. I see you didn't choose the part in my post about Herb Brooks being a "foul mouthed individual". The type of foul mouth that would instantly give a movie an R-rating. Disney, the last time I checked, doesn't release R-rated movies with their logo on it. I didn't say 100 percent true. That's what documentaries are supposed to be for.

A bit more jaded, a bit wiser. Actually the history regarding desegregation shows a much slower pace. Congress didn't expressly force desegregation until 1968 and even then in some counties around the US the schools weren't completely integrated until the early 1970's. My Dad went to a high school in Texas that was still segregated in 1969-1970. The old "colored" school still exists and is now the alternative school for kids that are "trouble makers".... Back to the movie. I didn't really care for it much, but I did like the Buck Owens "act naturally" thrown in the soundtrack. I didn't even know it was Ryan Gosling when I first saw the film back in the day...
