I enjoyed it but it was just so overhyped. I still don't feel it is nearly as good as some people claim, especially the acting in the film. There was but so much for either actor to do, yet alone to receive Oscar nominations and Emma Stone actually winning? Her performance doesn't come close to Natalie Portman in "Jackie" or Isabelle Hupert in "Elle".
I remember after the film coming out there were polls all over the internet about musicals and La La Land was beating classics like West Side Story, Grease, Mary Poppins etc. in polls about best film and best soundtrack. Its a bit nuts such a basic movie got so much hype that everyone believed it.
With that said, I do not dislike it. I enjoy it for what it is and I loved the opening musical number. I thought it was very beautifully shot and visually stunning at times. However, its a shallow story with basic thin acting and writing that skated by on looks.
5.5/10

Great chemistry between the leads, emotionally involving, visually creative (the planetarium sequence is amazing) and entertaining musical numbers. I think the relationship aspect of the film is it's strongest point actually.
Emma Stone is excellent here imo, especially during the green lit dinner table argument scene.
Overall the film is good, not great.
7/10

It's very well made, the two leads are good together, and everything was choreographed. I also was surprised at how simple the plot was though. It's a crowd pleaser but not sure if it should have won BEST PICTURE. I think I liked The Greatest Showman far better.

I really liked it. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone surprisingly had good chemistry with each other. The soundtrack was great with "Someone in the Crowd" and "City of Stars" being my favorite songs. I did appreciate the little homages to the classic Hollywood musical films. The chereography was also good. The plot is a standard "boy meets girl" romance film, but I felt the ending gave it some depth and made it realistically bittersweet.

It didn't win Best Picture. For five minutes it did. Yeah, but that wasn't a real win.

Started well and ended up not so good.
Chazelle blew the ending. It should have been what we all wanted, them dancing amongst the stars forever.
6/10

I actually just re-watched this recently and... I was a bit surprised as it noticeably improved for me. -Initial viewing (Apr 14th 2017) = 6/10 -Re-watch (Aug 22nd 2018) = 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 235 movies) but basically... during my initial viewing, without getting into the details, it took about 28-36 min before it stabled out where as this time around it was about 15min before it stabled out for the rest of the movie. plus, Gosling/Stone help boost it. like that intro with the people dancing on the cars was clearly the low point of the movie as that first 5min is exactly what NOT to do in a movie as it's boring. but outside of that it got a bit better within that first 15min but hit the 2nd duller stretch in the 10-13min area before finally stabling out around 15min. but once the movie stabled out, it got noticeably better from there on forward. I think what partially boosts it a bit for me is that it's a bit different from your typical movie for me. NOTE: for the record... Musicals tend to be THE genre I avoid (due to boredom(that intro dancing on cars scene in La La Land is a nice example of this)) but this one seems to be a exception to the rule. jesserebelI would apply that to damn near all Oscar nominated movies as a large portion of them tend to be forgettable. I have not seen either of those movies but chances are I would side with Stone as I suspect the chemistry between her and Gosling helps carry her performance a bit and, like I always say, no matter how good your performance is you need the movie to be solid enough otherwise it's not going to matter much. because, at least in my mind, if someone gives a solid performance in Movie A and someone gives a decent performance in Movie B, but Movie B is the more interesting movie, then ill likely side with Movie B straight up. so if there is one musical someone would praise... I would rather be it La La Land over pretty much everything else. Chances are ill like La La Land more than those movies you mentioned had I seen them especially given it's unlikely ill like Musical movies in general as La La Land is the only exception for me. You loved the opening where they danced on the vehicles while singing? ; that's hands down THE worst part of the movie as it's exactly what NOT to do in a movie as it's completely boring (that's the kind of stuff that makes musicals suck). but thankfully that only lasted the first 5 min and the 2nd worst part of the movie was between about 10-13min of the movie. but outside of that, basically around 15 min on forward, my interest in the movie was much more stable til the end. Yeah, but I don't really mind as I like movies to look good especially if it fits the movie well which it does in this movies case. mecano04I thought the opposite. it was a bit shaky for about the first 15min and then stabled out. Basically you wanted more of the typical ending then. I think the ending as is, works.

I liked it a lot. Of course, I was a struggling actor living in LA at the time, so it struck a chord for me. Had enough cynicism to balance the saccharine, imo.

Never saw it but its hype train was way too much mythical Hollywood magic factory nonsense.

Meh, it had it's moments, but overall it didn't really do much for me. 6/10. As far as colorful, stylish 2016 films about "making it" in LA, I preferred The Neon Demon by a significant margin.

I loved it. My favourite musical since Sweeney Todd. I even bought the piano notes and started playing the piano again after over a decade. The soundtrack is just crazily addictive.

mslo79 I didn't say the actual ending didn't work, I simply thought it tried too much to be smart or edgy compared to what it could have been. While I'm for smart/edgy/out of the box/whatever-you-want-to-name-that endings, I also believe some films could and should be enjoyed the way you would with Ziegfeld Follies. Here is a short clip. CoolJGS☺ If it wasn't meant to have fantasy in it, why was it a musical?

wondered why it was so enthusiastically liked … similar reaction to Frozen,... no desire to watch either again.
