mecano04Basically... I ultimately rate movies based on how much I enjoy watching them and the further they get away from that the lower the rating. that's the core of how I rate movies.
p.s. the majority of movies I see get a 5/10 (Thumbs Down. but usually okay enough for a viewing) with a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) being the next most common rating for me as between those two ratings that pretty much makes up about 7 out of every 10 movies I see with about 5 out of 10 being a 5/10 over the long term. currently IMDb shows 57%(or 1,287 titles) of everything I have seen got a 5/10, but ill add this in relation to that stat... I suspect had I seen a portion (or at least some) of the movies I scored a 5/10 more semi-recently that some of them would drop back to a 4/10(below average), possibly lower. so if my guesstimate here is roughly correct I would not be surprised if that 57% dropped to 50%(1,125 titles or so) or so as it's probably not a stretch to for roughly 150 movies out of those 1,287 or so to fall back to a 4/10 (or possibly less) had I seen them more recently instead of years ago etc. but, obviously, I am not going to waste my time re-watching forgettable (or worse) range movies. so things will remain how they are. or ill say this.. there is only about 550 movies TOPS out of the 2,200+ total movies I have seen that ill re-watch from time-to-time which comes out to about 25% TOPS of everything I have seen is worth re-watching as I always say a movies real worth in the long term is whether I want to re-watch it or not as it's like a good song, you want to hear it here and there as the years pass.
Keep in mind... the majority of movies I watch are okay enough for a viewing, but ultimately forgettable. hence, my 5/10 which is a Thumbs Down as while average is not bad, it's ultimately forgettable and that's why I lump it into the Thumbs Down side of things at the end of the day.
or to post some quick rating system info for me without the details...
-5/10 or less = Thumbs Down (won't re-watch (with rare exception))
-6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up (will re-watch)
so that basic scoring info is at the core of my rating system when you put it in very basic terms.
with that said... it's true we are not "miles apart" but, depending on if your rating system is similar to mine or not, that 5/10 to a 7/10 is still somewhat of a large gap. like for me a 5/10 is average/forgettable(but usually okay enough for a one time viewing) where as anything I score a 7/10 makes it within my Top 8.5% or so of everything I have seen which is basically my Top 189 movies out of the 2,200+ total movies I have seen. so while a 7/10 is not a super high score for me, it somewhat looks like it is if you look at that basic 189/2,200 thing. basically anything I score a 7/10 or higher qualifies for 'My Favorite Movies' even though I still like, and will re-watch, movies I score in the 6/10 range but I just don't like those as much as movies I score higher.
or I could say this without giving too much details...
7/10 and higher = my higher tier movies (i.e. 'My Favorite Movies')
6/10 = I mildly enjoy and are worth re-watching.
5/10 = usually okay enough for a viewing, but ultimately forgettable. so... Thumbs Down.
4/10 and less = crap. these pretty much waste my time.
Ill make a bit of a comment here...
I noticed some people seem to think the word 'entertainment' is just limited to say 'dumb/simple action movies and the like'. but I tend to view 'entertainment' as ones all around interest/enjoyment of watching the movie play out regardless of what kind of movies it is.
so basically, for me, movies ultimately boil down to some sort of feeling/emotional response they give me which determines how much I like or dislike a movie and I rate accordingly.
NOTE: some people always seem to think my rating system is all complicated etc, as it can sometimes appear that way, given what I say in relation to my basic 1 through 10 rating scale... but it's actually pretty simply in that it boils down to what I was saying above with a feeling/emotional response a movie gives me in a positive or negative way. sure, there is varying degree's of emotion/feeling, as some movies can give off a solid emotional response in a different but equally great way etc. I am sure you get the gist of it

NOTE: also, given the above info you can probably figure out that I DO NOT rate movies in relation to their genre or type etc but instead rate them in relation to ALL movies I have seen which I feel is more honest/accurate. so given this info... for example, you can reason out that a movie I score a 6/10 I will ALWAYS like more than a 5/10 and so on. because with the 'rating within their genre' type of person will be more flawed because say a movie is great within it's genre but is not THAT great for the person viewing it in general... that can skew things with that type of rater in that they might give, for example, Movie A a 10/10 and Movie B a 7/10 but yet end up liking Movie B more than Movie A. but with my system that will NEVER happen as something I score higher I ALWAYS like all around more than something I score lower since I ALWAYS rate movies in relation to everything I have seen as it's the only proper way to rate movies if you ask me is based on once all around enjoyment straight up.
