Are there any cardinals who could replace him who have not been similarly affected?

Leadership in the Catholic church covers up sex abuse? NOOOOO. You don't say! And this surprises WHO exactly? Do you ever discuss the sex abuse problem with any Catholics you know well personally? In my experience, many faithful Catholics continue to view this as being limited to "a few bad apples" who do not in the view of the faithful reflect at all on the wider clergy and clerical hierarchy. Even here on this board, how often do the Catholics bring up the topic of the sex abuse? Where are the threads discussing praying the rosary for the victims and for God to give the church leadership the guidance and strength to do the right thing in dealing with the problem, however painful that might be for them personally? I haven't seen any. A few years ago, before Francis ascended to the pontificate, there were rumors, allegations that the scandal reached the upper ranks of the Vatican. Some have speculated that it was that scandal which helped push Benedict to abdicate, using his kidney disease partly as a cover. Francis' selection was supposed to be a turning of the page to a church leader with clean hands. But if the allegation of this ex-Vatican diplomat is to be believed, even Francis' hands are soiled, which would help explain why he has not been more aggressive in handling the problem. He has talked a good game, but it doesn't seem like he has actually done very much.

EλευθερίI tend not to discuss religious matters with my religious friends (catholic or otherwise) as they know I’m an atheist. The only time religion ever comes up (and it’s usually with Protestant friends/family) is when they want to figure out why I’m not a Christian anymore. And those conversations tend to go in circles so at this point I avoid those as well. There is a resident Catholic here on these boards that likes to talk about “pedophillia” (her spelling), but it’s hardly ever in the context of the Catholic Church which I find rather funny and ironic.
