If the NFL would ever go to a 17, or 18 game regular season, EVERY player could only play a maximum of 16 regular season games, meaning, of course, that EVERYONE would have to sit at least one game (or two, for 18 games) every season. SAVE FERRIS

I like the idea that teams would have to maximize their depth. It would be fun to see when stars would be sat.

What a stupid idea. Let’s assume a team this season goes 0-16, and then get the #1 draft pick in 2019. They draft a QB that’s as good as Brady, Montana, Young, Starr, Namath. Why would you agree to a system whereby this guy cannot play every single down of the season ? Why restrict your chances of winning any game at all ?

This is one of the dumber ideas out there.

But then everyone would be in the same boat. The Packers would strategically decide when to bench Aaron Rodgers based on their opponents and who they’re benching. Downside is, if you clinch the playoffs in, say, week 13, you’re benching EVERYBODY at the end. Adds an interesting almost fantasy element but I don’t see it happening.

18 regular season games is just a bad idea. It's fine right where it is at 16 games. The NFL tries to hide behind we are listening to the fans but they aren't listening to everything. We want a shorter preseason, not a longer regular season. It's still ridiculous how these teams charge full price for preseason games that are mandatory to buy if you want to be a season ticket holder

Once the NFL got to the point of 20 pre/regular games, they are not going to walk it back and lose out on all that money. We's got to have that revenue. Player safety? The owners say F them.

I'll say this about the idea - it's not as dumb as that idea about home runs in MLB.

HATE IT!!!! It would destroy the quality of play for some games, give a huge advantage to teams with a strong backup QB, and it would result in way too much strategic benching of players and all. Keep the season at 16 games, but if you expand it let the players play every game.

you dolts haven't come up with the proper answer. you axe 2 preseason games and you do extend the regular season by 2 i also think it's time for a re-allignment and if we're going to 18 games - not 1 but '2' Bye's may be in order. you also cut down on the 'Bye Week' During the Super Bowl. so essentially - you're not extending the season one bit with my proposal

Jerry Jones says the Cowboys have conducted "studies" showing that players actually get injured in the preseason more than the regular season, therefore 2 more games should be added to the regular season because it's safer! I'm completely sure that ol' Jerrah is suggesting this purely out of concern for the players!

The NFL makes most of its money from tv yes? So who cares if a team has 2 bye weeks, the league will still rule the ratings. I don't agree with PK on the limiting though, that angle is a non starter.
One compromise might be expanding roster size. There would surely have to be regulations on that lest a handful of teams signs the vast majority of stars just to sit around not playing for their opposition.
