My favorite historical “what if?” style comic is Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman. It is a self contained twisty mystery featuring a number of Marvel characters in the historical setting. So you wouldn’t be coming into something in the middle or needing a bunch more information, but could do more research or looking into nods if you wished.
Like Ultimate Spidey, The Ultimates is a really great alternate version of the Avengers team. The first two volumes are excellent and don’t require further knowledge or to keep going beyond them. Many MCU ideas are from the Ultimates, which you’d pick up as you went.
In the same alternate setting line, but not Marvel, I also love Superman Red Son, where Supes arrived on earth as a baby in The USSR, rather than America, and grew up as a Soviet icon. DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke is always awesome, taking place around the Cold War era.
Another amazing non-Marvel comic is Saga, by Brian Vaughan and Fiona Staples. It’s my favorite ongoing comic at this point. I used to be super into The Unwritten, by Mike Carey, as well, which is much more literary and mystery based.
Happy reading

There is an excellent graphic novel-Thor & Loki : Blood Brothers. Its pretty much where the personalities for MCU's Loki is taken from. It picks up with Loki on the throne. Doesnt deal with how. Just its done. Loki discovers the thing he always thought he wanted isn't what he wants & the person he has hated all his life is the one person who has always been there for him
