Almost the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was the posters I've been seeing advertising Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the FOURTH version of "A Star is Born".
God help me if it's because I'm getting older and resist changing times, but the 1976 remake with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was obnoxious enough. (It really wasn't a very good movie (my opinion, obviously) and didn't need to be done, anyway - somehow I am thinking it was a vanity project for La Streisand.) I didn't see the 1937 version with Janet Gaynor and Frederic March, but that one got excellent reviews and I think almost always the first version is going to be the best version.
The reason why the 1954 is unique in that it is a remake that is generally considered the best and the definitive version of this story is really one reason only, and that reason is Judy Garland, whose performance here is considered the essential Judy Garland performance (along, obviously, with Dorothy). Well, that and the fact that because it starred Judy Garland, it almost had to have a musical spin, and some of the numbers in the '54 version are considered classics.
I know that the distance of time sometimes can often change perspective and I have nothing personally against Lady Gaga (though couldn't she have picked a better stage name for herself?), but I just cannot ever imagine her being in the same level of iconography or the same talent even as Miss Garland. And with Bradley Cooper vs. James Mason, it's no contest. James Mason was an exquisite actor and what a speaking voice! Bradley Cooper I find to be boring.

RJ Mcready is one of the reasons why the film is so good and Russell's amazing performance. RJ Mcready is not an iconic character to the general public and is not the main reason the movie is remembered so well. He is not ingrained into the mind of the masses in the same way Han Solo, Indiana Jones etc. are. He is a better character and better performance than Harrison Ford as Hans Solo imo, but that doesn't make him iconic on the same level as the other characters mentioned. I also don't think RJ Mcready fits with the other characters he is talking about because he is only in ONE movie. The other characters are franchise characters where money can be made off of the character brand. There is no reason his character even needs used in another movie. As much as I love Kurt Russell in The Thing, I wouldn't find it overly distracting if they re-cast the character if they ever made a remake of the movie. This isn't the case for me when it comes to every other character in the video and it doesn't have to do with the fact that I don't like the movie as much as most people. I think The Thing is a much better movie than Escape from New York, but re-casting Snake Plisskin would be very distracting if they made a remake or sequel. Ford did a great performance as Solo in the original trilogy of Star Wars and made him a legend! Same for Indiana Jones and Han Solo is a badass character as no one else can be him other than Ford. RJ McReady is well known among Sci-fi and horror communities and geek culture.

People love Ghostbusters, The Thing and Star Wars, but I think they are merely good movies. I get why people love them, but I don't. They aren't movies that connect with me.

Well Ghostbusters had an impact on me growing up since i saw the 85 re-issue in theaters at age 4 and seen it many times and one of my faves, same for the Star Wars trilogy. Even saw The Thing on video when my dad rented it when i was 5 as i watched it with him and thought it was awesome.
They are all favorites! Bill Murray and Harold Ramis ARE both Venkman and Spengler.

It's challenging to imagine anyone else but Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry because he's been associated with the role since 1971.

See even some people in the industry are against this idea like Screenrant
