So Bill and Ted are 49 years old. About to be 50.
They still haven't made that 'Epic Song'. An alien invasion happens and easily take over the world. They find out Rufus was an alien from another world.
They were never going to be famous and bring universal harmony. He used them to take those historical people away from their time periods to implement a plan for global domination. Bill and Ted were used. Feeling guilty they decide to make it right.
So they repair their phone booth time machine and go back to stop their teenage selves from taking those figures from history and allowing the aliens to implement their plans.
So after they one by one stop their teenage selves from stealing Khan, Joan, Beethoven, etc... They finally get to Napoleon and return to Bill's garage.
They save the world.
