Even if the animal is cared for, it still has a survival instinct and can sense fear just as we do as humans. Cows in the field often look up when they see something that comes near by and could be a potential threat to them. The imminent approach of death is picked up on when they sense what is going on around them at the time and this fear is turned into vibration. Seeing it all neatly packaged in the supermarket and taking it for granted when one hasn't done the killing deed themselves is about denial to me.
Most animals humans won't consume, but I especially feel bad for chickens—who give us eggs, or sheep-who give us wool, or pigs—which I see as sacred and not for any religious reasons, or a cow—unless one was born in India—which are bred by the numbers for human consumption.
And pigs are as smart as domestic dogs. What goes on in most commercial egg farms is horrific And from what I have heard, pigs share similar dna to humans. Consuming pork would be similar to consuming human flesh if this was the case.
I ate meat for the first 33yrs of my life, the thing is, is was also cultural and I didn't care at the time. I just had an epiphany and made a complete change. I also didn't find it that difficult, although it did take some time to get over the temptation feeling of not having meat. I guess that was more about the texture. I guess I was lucky though, because my new diet suited me, even my dad said as much. It does take a fair bit of discipline to go the whole way and I am not vegan. I am lacto\ovo, dairy and eggs, no seafood either.

So do houseflies... This is what happens when you cross carnivorous humans with houseflies:
