Any fans of her writing? Reading her reviews, I find myself more often then not disagreeing with her. On 2001: A Space Odyssey - "a monumentally unimaginative movie" but some of her reviews are especially well written, i.e. Last Tango in Paris, Bonnie and Clyde.

I've only seen soundbites of her reviews in other contexts, I don't think I've ever read a full review by her.

She was an excellent writer, however she didn't really have a whole lot of respect for the new age Hollywood of the 70s. And as a result, many great films of the period were given unnecessarily scathing reviews by her. That made her a bit of a blowhard.

I hate reviewers who put their personal views ahead of the film instead of considering it on its own merits.

I have my respect for her since she championed the New Hollywood films and directors (i.e. Bonnie and Clyde) when critics like Bosley Crowther didn't, but she's not one of my favorite film critics.

I hardly ever agree with her, but I’m a huge fan just of her prose. Critic Renata Adler wrote a scathing and hilarious analysis of Kael’s writing here, with which I’m rather amused even if I find Kael a much better writer than Adler gives her credit. Also, in the end I agree more with Andrew Sarris than with Pauline Kael, but in retrospect I think it’s best to admire both of the (more alike than they knew) rivals and what they did for the American cinema.

Certainly the worst thing that happened that month.
Nah, wasn't a fan. She was like Gloria Steinem and Armond White in a blender.
