That's very sad news, Linda. I'll never forget his cameo appearance as himself in an episode of THE GOLDEN GIRLS, titled "Ladies of the Evening".
His passing means that Buck Taylor is the only surviving cast member of GUNSMOKE.

He will definitely be missed. I always enjoyed his films working with Hal Needham especially. Although he made a supreme comeback in Boogie Nights.

Shocking news! I grew up on his movies, I didn't know he was sick. He was supposed to film a role for Tarentino's new movie, I wonder if he did? R.I.P. Burt, you will be missed.

Smokey and the Bandit was the first movie I saw of him, in theater too. The movie featured a hot topless Sally Field. Boogie Night is probably his best. RIP
EDIT: The Sally Field scene actually was from a different movie named Stay Hungry that came out around the same time.

I saw Gator at a drive-in. That may have been the first.

Just heard this. One of the heartthrobs of my generation. It just seemed as if he'd always be around.
He made me laugh a lot on Evening Shade. I don't know what he was like IRL, but I loved his sense of humor about himself onscreen. RIP guy, a lot of people are going to miss you.

amyghost I always imagined that the Burt in Evening Shade was what he was like off screen as well. May not have been true … but it just felt so right !

amyghost I always imagined that the Burt in Evening Shade was what he was like off screen as well. May not have been true … but it just felt right ! He was a true natural. Whatever the actual case may be, his screen persona just came across effortlessly as being the sort of individual he'd have been offscreen as well.

Seldom mentioned is Burt's movie HOOPER. It's sort of an ode to the Hollywood Stunt Man and I rank it high on a list of Reynolds' best films. Thanks for the ride, Burt.

Smokey and the Bandit was the first movie I saw of him, in theater too. The movie featured a hot topless Sally Field. Not in any version of the movie I have ever seen... (Broadcast, Cable, DVD...) I'd remember that! The scene must have been removed from all cuts after the original theater showings... Which I never saw. I was pretty pissed that the DVD didn't include the full Snowman/Fred scene where Fred goes for a swim, that was featured in the TV Cut..

A little search showed that the scene I remembered was from Stay Hungry. It is funny that I have no recollection of seeing that film. Being that was the only time I saw Smokey and the Bandit and it was in a Grindhouse type of theater, Stay Hungry may have been a second feature. Thanks for pointing it out.

"I always wanted to experience everything and go down swinging," he wrote in the final paragraph of his memoir. "Well, so far, so good. I know I'm old, but I feel young. And there's one thing they can never take away: Nobody had more fun than I did."

I probably haven't seen as many Burt Reynolds movies as most people have, but I always remember his guest star appearance on The X-Files in the Season 9 episode 'Improbable'.
R.I.P.

One of my favorite celebrity quotes came from an old Playboy interview with Burt (I may be paraphrasing slightly, but this is close): "You can lie, you can steal, you can commit murder--but to be boring is a sin. And God will punish you for that." Well, whatever other sins Burt might have committed, he was never boring.
