I don't mind if genre movies play the same tune, as long as they are well done.
the salvation (2014) seraphim falls (2006) in a valley of violence (2016) meek's cutoff (2010) slow west (2015)
the revenant & Quentin Tarantino have definitely helped to keep the western movie alive.

I don't think they are played out, but I don't know who a proper director would be for a new film.

I’d be interested in seeing Christopher Nolan direct a small-scale western—a variation on Rio Bravo or something like that. It’d be interesting.

I think westerns are so simplistic-they depend mostly on the actors and the story drama. If they exist to be political where the white guy must lose or die or get his leg cut off then yes, they are played out. Italy made hundreds of westerns but they didn't go that far with political themes so there was a lot of variety. Too many Hollywood westerns these days seem like they were written with Hillary Clinton standing behind the writer and leaning over their shoulder to give story advice.

is there any potential directions they can go at all?. I'd like to believe a good writer and director can whip out a good movie from any subject on the fly. When I think modern westerns I think Django Unchained. It's not conventional, and it doesn't always have the sandy color scheme, saloons and other western staples, but the wild west and its implied lack of rules and order can make for a diverse backdrop.

You can do so much with a Western.
Allegory like "There Will Be Blood" Greek Tragedy like "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" Horror like "Bone Tomahawk"
Heists, War, Love, Shootouts, Detective, etc...

So you would rather have Trump or some other Neanderthal looking over the writer's shoulder? Why don't you give this one-note right-wing whining about how persecuted and oppressed white males are. You never get any back up or even much response of any kind. YOU are the one who is always injecting politics - conservative extremist politics at that. I say this as a friend who enjoys reading your other posts about movies. You frequently have interesting perspectives.

No, whether it be the classical 'cowboys and Indians' or "cowboys and robbers' or 'cowboys and robber barons' or something meant more as an historical drama (like The Revenant) or even just more revisionist minded storytelling like in the vein of Unforgiven or Dances with Wolves.

Jane Russell said something about movies being better when Hollywood was full of Republicans but whatever the case, the more movies have become liberalized with a capital L the more sucky they become. Dial it down!
Traditional storytelling should be apolitical really.
But Hollywood and the surrounding distribution/advertising system now is entirely Liberal-political. They wont let anything through that doesnt reflect their ideology which is stifling and annoying.

Like I always say... movies are not really about doing something new but taking a idea that's already been done and doing it well.
the most recently released Western that's among My Favorite Movies... Hostiles (2017-2018) which is currently my #1 movie of 2018.
p.s. there is 15 Westerns that are among My Favorite Movies.
