Versatile British Shakespearean character actor, for many maybe most known nowdays as Bilbo Baggins, a role he had played on radio before the films.

Holm was educated at the independent Chigwell School in Essex. His parents retired to Mortehoe, Devon and then Worthing where he joined an amateur dramatic society. A visit to the dentist led to an introduction to Henry Baynton, a well-known provincial Shakespearean actor who helped Holm train for admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he secured a place in 1949. He graduated from RADA in 1953.
Holm made his television debut on the live broadcasts of
ITV Play of the Week in 1957. He made his uncredited movie debut in
Girls at Sea 1958 and his first credited role in
The Bofors Gun 1968.
Ian Holm's only Oscar nomination was for his Supporting Role in
Chariots of Fire 1981, but won a BAFTA award for.
