Happy 91st Birthday Freddie Jones!!! Born on September 12, 1927 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England Thanks for everything, so far... British character actor, usually playing eccentric characters, and for playing Sandy Thomas in Emmerdale TV-series since 2005.  He became an actor after 10 years of working as a laboratory assistant with the British Ceramic Research Association in Penkhull, leaving (according to him) because of a 'ban on beards'. He then pursued his hobby of acting on a full-time basis. He was trained at the Rose Bruford College and amongst other roles played Stanley in the Pinter-directed revival of The Birthday Party in 1963. He became famous for his award-winning role as Claudius in the 1968 British TV series The Caesars. Some samples of his career: The Caesars 1968 TV mini-series as Caludius, with Ralph Bates as Caligula. Otley 1969 Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 1969, with Simon Ward and Peter Cushing The Man Who Haunted Himself 1970, with Roger Moore The Ghosts of Motley Hall 1976 to 1978 TV-series in 20 episodes, a family friendly fantasy series. Zulu Dawn 1979 The Elephant Man 1980, with Anthony Hopkins and Dexter Fletcher. Firefox 1982, with Clint Eastwood Krull 1983, with Ken Marshall E la nave va aka And the Ship Sails On 1983, directed by Federico Fellini. Dune 1984 Young Sherlock Holmes 1985, with Nicholas Rowe Cold Comfort Farm 1995  Since 2005 as Sandy Thomas in Emmerdale TV-series. One of my favorites. In Leonard Maltin's review of Firefox he says Jones deserves the "Charles Laughton award for eccentric acting."

Should have been included in our "hams" thread.
I have a weird (false?) memory of him being the first to portray Bristow. Bristow was a humble office clerk in a strip cartoon that ran for 50 years, a sort of forerunner to Milton and Dilbert. But I cannot see any mention of this on Wikipedia or IMDb. Perhaps it was an "off-West End" theater play? Does this ring a bell with any other Ancient Brits here? Would have been mid-60s.

His Claudius was pretty good. Ralph Bates was also a memorable Caligula.
