'Avatar' received acclaim from both critics and audiences upon its release, but has also suffered from a significant amount of backlash.
It was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and won 3 awards: best art direction, best cinematography and best visual effects.
Some see it as an incredible story and a technological marvel, while others find it clichéd and overrated.
What is your opinion?

8/10 - Pretty darn entertaining movie despite the unoriginal storylines.
(If Cameron would give up screenwriting and just stick to directing, he'd probably score 9s and 10s from me instead of 8s.)

I give it an 8, and not a single point for the story, which was weak, but those visuals were magnificent in 3D. I haven't seen it like that in any other movie.

Avatar is a tricky one because I would still grade my initial 3D viewing as an A+ experience. Taking the 3D glasses off at the end felt like leaving an avatar trip like JC gave us.
Blu re-watches at home are a bit too long, with 2 endings imo - Home Tree & the other one.

Rewatched it. 5/10. Not as good as I remember it and I have more than a handful of problems with the movie. The good does outweigh the bad however so it gets a thumbs up.

Best description I've read is Dances with Wolves in Space. I'd much rather watch Dances with Wolves.

Ditto for me as well, though I'd probably vote it lower than both of you. I could not for the life of me understand the hype, and I found the characterization and plotting unremarkable and unoriginal--indeed, for long stretches I was bored. "Mediocre in every way except visuals" is indeed the best way to describe it. |
